Arguably, we're short a melee intelligence user and a ranged strength user if we're trying to fill the remaining basic archtypes, so DPS are probably the only ones who should be guaranteed one of those. We have our Flat Heals, Mitigation Heals and Balance- DPS Tank, Tank Tank and Balanced Tank.
And expect it or not, doesn't change what is.

No, DPs is dps is dps. There is no more reason to add it anymore than someone wants a tank that uses a hammer except you know some people really think "HAMMERS ARE AWESOME"
There is no reason to add anything, other than "people want it".
Your argument's logic would just be used against you with any counter point you would then try to make.
This is actually the coolest idea I've heard for SAM.
Make them attack from the front!
Add like 10 potency to all attacks if they are done from the front.
The SAM would have to dodge cleaves when possible, but instead of offensive CDs like Blood for Blood, they would get defensive CDs to survive the boss cleaves.
DRG was alrdy able to take hits from some EX primals, as they were used as OTs by the japanese before.
So this alone would be extremely interesting to pull off.
(Their only offensive CD should apply the 10 potency to all attacks, regardless of your current position.)
To make up for their near tank like defenses, they would need to lack AoE potential, and something that hinders their threat potential. (such as adding to the defensive CDs a lower threat generated or cut current threat, to avoid them MTing.)

There are no "missing Dps slots" that need to be filled. There are "I think it would be really cool to have this class" there is no objective need or requirement for anything.
Unless 4.0 changes things so Dps is the hardest role we aren't going to see much change but any argument from authority on slots is just silly. Say "I want a Whip dps class" or "I want a melee pet dps class" rather than trying(and failing miserably) to sound objective.
I agree with this, which is why I said it. (Though "Objective" in your statement suggest you have an objective in mind, but arent telling us what it is, so going by the next statement, I assume you mean "role" more than anything. Unless of course I missed it earlier in the thread.)
I'm not quite sure what you are trying to say with this part.
We have 3 roles already established, and we dont need new jobs/classes to have a 4th or more new roles.
"Jobs/Classes" usually seem to be a means in which to have both limitations/balance, while also having flavor in play style, lore, and aesthetics.
Otherwise we dont need "jobs", we can just have 3 roles, and thats you're only options of choice.
I for one cant stand cast bars.
I find armor and great swords aesthetically pleasing, and excite me to collect them.
I find off the GCD attacks fun to weave between my attacks.
I like resource management, rather than "use the highest dmg attack/ability always, like with most DPS.
I love being defensive, and using defensive cool downs rather often.
I like abilities that proc.
I love healing other people.
All but one of those fits DRK. With PLD coming in a close 2nd (mainly from changes made in 3.0, as it didnt have as many of these then)
So before DRK, I played PLD, but it wasnt really THAT fun, just mildly fun, but now almost every aspect of DRK makes me want to keep playing, even when i clear the hardest content.
There is validity in wanting unique roles, and there is validity in wanting some new flavors of the same roles.
