Dalmasca of XII was a nation at war with the Archadian Empire. Dalmasca eventually fell due to the machinations of Archadian subterfuge, most notably spying.

Technically, the real war was between Archadia and Rozzaria. Dalmasca had the unfortunate distinction of being a neutral territory on the land-bridge separating the two, kind of how Ala Mhigo is relative to greater Eorzea.

The "yae" honorific means in line of succession. The "wir" honorific means family members not in the line of succession. And as far as I recall, the succession war was just between Varis and his uncle.
