

ESO and Neverwinter would beg to disagree.FFXIV is the only current MMO that's reliant on a console, all MMOs right now are a PC affair, and all require a PC that absolutely steamrolls PS3.
With PS3 around, FFXIV just can't compete with other modern MMOs. Check the WoW spec changes needed from expansion pack to expansion pack, they are exponential.
FF14 is the only MMO with a subscription-based model on consoles (unless there's another one that I'm unaware of). But it is not the only MMO on consoles.
ESO and Neverwinter PS4 are trash that don't even have cross play with PC, they're limited to their own little console bubble, and aren't interacting with the PC environment.

That was actually design choice, not because of PS3. It's suppose to support each areas individuality.


While I agree with your disparagement of the two games, their sheer existence shows that FF14 is NOT the only MMO on consoles. Something which directly contradicts your own statement that it was.
And my brief trial of Neverwinter suggested it may actually be cross platform play ... though I don't know that for sure.
Square-Enix operates on hard numbers, the % of PS3 players is miniscule, and within the next 9 months to 2+ years worth of Bloodstorm's expansion it's clear the majority will upgrade in some form, be it PC or PS4.
As for PC system requirements, S-E has all the hard data on what the PC specs of the average person playing the game are, and what settings they're playing on, they aren't going to push it out of the orbit of the majority of PC players of the game.
These aren't random decisions, they're are all backed up by the proper data to make the decisions.
For around $200 give or take you can pick up a GTX 760 and 8 gigs of ram and upgrade a 2006 PC to blow the doors off a ps3, so nice try to those trying to say hardware limitations was not the reason for removal of PS3 support.
A new PS4 Slim + Uncharted costs $300. The 2.5x more powerful Pro will be $400.
You can probably get a used older model for $200, that thing literally has everything, just need a TV.


None of which is relevant for them dropping support.
If 40-50 percent of the game's players were playing on PS3, they would not be dropping it - would not be cutting off at least 35% (assuming some upgraded) of the revenue stream from the game. Very few people still play on PS3, not enough to justify the cost of continuing to develop and update the client for it, THAT is why they are dropping it.
PS3 limitations going away are a nice side benefit, but you're deluding yourself if you think that those limitations are the only, or even the prime, reason for dropping support.
