Ul'dah should have an aethernet shard by the market.

As titled. I was thinking about the cities. Which one is the best, and why is it Limsa Lominsa? I realise it's because it's the only city where the marketboard and retainer bell are in very close proximity to the aetheryte.

In Gridania, there is an aethernet shard nearby, but in another zone. In Foundation, same deal.

Then for Ul'dah, not only is there no aethernet shard in its direct vicinity (each one necessitates about 5 seconds walk), it's also in another zone. The closest you get is the Adventurer's Guild or one of the crafting guilds, but in both instances it's a different zone AND you have to walk more. (A few seconds every time adds up.)

Ul'dah, being the city controlled by money, should logically have an aethernet shard by its markets. And outside of lore, it should have one for ease of access to put it on par with the other cities.

But on the other side Ul'dah and Gridania have GC headquarters near aetheryte which is very useful for squadron management and daily turn-ins, while Limsa has it in another zone.

How about some aetheryte in Hinterlands, the most inconvenient zone to get into? It actually already there in center, just inactive.

You're looking for the Aftcastle aetheryte in Limsa. Takes you right to their doorstep.

And people have been asking for a Hinterlands aetheryte for forever now. SE said it was supposed to be Idyllshire, but it's still pretty annoying and inconvenient.

Originally Idyllshire was not a zone but just a sub-section of the Hinterlands. Upon seeing Revenant's Toll impact on the game as a major hub they decided it'd be less stressful to separate it. To me it reflect how rushed 2.0 was - Having to separate the game into zones (which don't even try to connect to each other...which is even worse....) and to not be able to accommodate an endgame hub.

The request wasn't asking for Ul'dah's main aetherite to be moved next to the market, just for an aethernet shard to be placed there, so the better comparison would be how far is it to the nearest shard. Limsa's Aftcastle shard is right next to the GC headquarters. (Gridania is actually the furthest for that.)

All three have an aethernet shard near the GC HQ. Of those, for Ul'dah and Gridania it's the main aetherite.

Two of the three (Limsa and Gridania) have aethernet shards near the market area. In Limsa's case, one of them is the main aetherite. But Ul'dah doesn't have one at all, which is a bigger issue than whether it's the main one or a shard.

This is very Square Enix. They design things like this. They seem to hate mirror patterns that seem almost common place in other games. You see this approach in their design in other games I think as well. Its just kinda funny. As SuperZay said though, I think the GC headquarters is the trade off, and was by design.

Fair point, but Gridania still has the most superior access in that case? I think making everything convenient shouldn't somehow violate good design, though. A case can be made against the homogenisation of the cities, but I think each of the four cities has a very different character already.

Considering engagement with retainer bell and marketboard is likely higher than the engagement with the Grand Company, though (until very recently), I don't think it makes sense to "make a tradeoff" of accessibility.

Well I know myself, and most people I know in game we rarely use the markets in the major cities. We use the MB that sits right next our Large FC house. Its faster than all 3 cities.

Protip...........click on the giant aetherite, select aethernet, click on adventurers quild. Boom 2 second walk to the ul'dah markets,

Same goes for foundation, "jeweled crozier " for market boards and even in idylshire, just select what gate you wanna go to.

that's not a protip, the complaint is you have to zone between that aethernet and the market. a better layout would be to move that Adventurer's Guild aetheryte to the side door on Ruby Road Exchange where it's halfway between the AG and the Mail Moogle and add another one on the other side of the zone line in Steps of Thal.
