    Not sure you understood what I meant by fake. I meant it's fake because it's a mix of English (old and modern) and no one in real life speaks that way. I said Old English because I didn't care enough to try to pin down exactly what it'd be called. Though I wouldn't call the pirates language English. lol I'll know better than to be lazy if I post in this thread again, because people will want to nitpick to show how smart they're. xD

    Thankfully her English is a lot better than that, at least from the conversations I've had with her. So, no need to worry. Plus, I'd be getting her on Odin, same realm as me. Which as far as I know, different datacentre to Leviathan, so you'd have nothing to worry about.

    As I'm sure you are well aware, it takes more than one person to be able to kick a player from a duty, so in all those instances there were at least two people agreeing they'd be better off without you tanking.

    I started this game at April, and it took me 4 months to get through the whole story line and reach LV 60.
    From the perspective of a non-native speaker, that long cutscene surely helped to improve one's reading ability, but only reading(or I'd rather say, understanding).
    As what others say, the dialogue style in this game is outdated. You might expand your vocabulary here, but had better not follow the way they speak.
    A better way to practice one's language, as I found after LV 60, is joining team play with native speakers, or just staying here--the official forum--to discuss with others.

    I find even through a game, the way of learning a language does not change a lot: you should learn it by using it.

    As flavored up as the English in the game is, I can't imagine it being especially problematic for a native speaker, but it would by no means make a good reference for language learners. That's not to say it's all crap — merely that certain areas and NPCs are more likely to run into awkward language, both to the learner and even to a native speaker, that you wouldn't want to imitate. On the whole, this has lessened with Heavensward, as far as I can recall, but ARR did try to rather heavily coat dialogue in dialects, for better or worse. The conversations they can have with other players, on the other hand, should be quite useful. I'd recommend playing from time to time in English, to get a sense of the ability, UI component, and character names, and playing with friends willing to converse often during leveling, be that by text or voice chat.

    I am not a english speaker and I have learnt reading fluently english from this game ^^;

    such as noob and noooooooob are derp WTFun boot him LMAO idr prolly RIP and "sh... it happens" then why? srs/srsly?
    and especially when ppl brb or afk the reasons will be a single word "bio" "ovan" "pizza" "door" "cat" "kid" "cell" etc..
    and when they said 1sec it means 3mins, when they said 1 min it still means 3 mins..lol

    Most positive learning is when ppl say back and by default everyone will say wb then only ty will be used for response.

    I guess it's a very good place to practice.
    There is no secret, to learn a language, you have to practice either by speaking or reading/writting. Considering most of the players speak in english (even when no one in the party is xD) they'll have plenty of occasion to practice ^^
    Plus, most of the time, when you don't get what someone is saying, he/she will be nice and rephrase it. Englsih is not my mother tongue and i learned a lot of new things thanks to the game and the players on the forum who would explain to me when they use expression i could not translate ^^

This whole 'please don't say anything even slightly negative' mentality that we seem to be going towards and the devs seemingly pushing towards it is creating a disturbing trend.

    I learned English by playing Icewind Dale and Baldurs Gate series, till then I knew only a few words, now I can communicate with people even in scientific conferences (work related). Unfortunately FFXIV English seems odd, at least in starting areas of the game.

    I'm not a native Eng speaker and I'd recommend people to read books, comics/manga, and then watch people talk on Youtube (listening to talkers is better than watching movies when it comes to learning a language).
