Can WHM survive on pure healing alone? (Looking into 4.0)

On WHM+AST compositions, WHM is the off healer.

Probably the weirdest thing I've heard on this forum in awhile, no offense but that's certainly out of the norm. If a white mage focuses on DPSing as much as say, a scholar does, they'll be out of MP before the fight is half done most of the time. And noct is made to get shields up quickly for mitigation and has much better MP management, which lets them dance in and out of cleric to put shields up where needed and go back into throwing malefics. Also white mage can keep everyone topped through most fights with very little effort as a main healer should, noct takes several casts to do such a thing and also has no way to maintain HoTs on tanks and injured dps, what with collective being their only one.

A shield-spec is never acceptable as a raid main healer unless there is no other option.

None taken but you're forgetting one simple fact. Noct AST is not a SCH.
And i'm aware of WHM mp issues, i've pointed them before on how WHM on full burst can only keep dps for 7-8mins without external help. That's where possible ewers and ballad on jumps come in to help for the remaining 2-4 mins of the fight (usually fights last 10-12 mins, afterwards enrage timer kicks in). Hopefully we'll see this solved with 4.0 combat revamp.

Plus the dps toolkit of WHM is also a LOT more mp friendly than the healing one.

Then again, you are not taking in mind that a dd whm chaincasts and a healer whm doesnt. So even if dd toolkit basically costs less mp per cast, in the end you running out of mana way faster.

I think I'd place WHM as off-healer too when grouped with a nAST. You let the WHM place HoT effects/Asylum on the targets needed, giving a set of time where they're still healing but also able to deal damage in Cleric Stance. Although ASTs got less accuracy-dependent spells, I think WHM has the best potency-per-mp among the healers when it comes to dealing damage.

Implying that one person doing ALL the healing while the other only does dps isnt outdated at this point anyway?
The best thing is for the healers to split the healing and the damage dealing between each other, but yes, Nocturnal AST would be the better "main" healer with a white mage to keep up the tank and such due to how much extra potency it has now in Noct
