I don't understand why any piece of furniture that has a surface that can hold items doesn't have the table top attribute (I also don't understand why I can fly over mountains but not land on them but that is for a different thread). While there are ways to make the illusion of a table top it won't work for many pieces of furniture. The harpsichord for example needs to have an open area underneath to look right so adding a table/chest underneath to allow me to place a candelabra ruins the look. I never thought of your Lalafell problem but it too makes sense that NPCs should also be able to be a tabletop item.
You don't need to add a table. You need a full wall partition and a shelf.

I created a video on how to do the process for PS4/controller users since a lot of videos explain it for keyboard.

Now I understand what you were talking about. It's different than some of the compound constructions I've seen. I'll have to give that a try but doesn't change my opinion that if it's flat and solid I should just be able place an object on it.
