During 1.0 and at the beginning of ARR Thancred's class was Gladiator who fought with daggers. As Rogue/Ninja came ingame, Gladiators lost their daggers as weapons and Thancred became a Rogue. So the similarity to Paladin combat came from the Gladiator combat style of Thancred.

Thancred's class may have always been glad for simplicity sake, but he's never fought like one story-wise. In his fight was Gaius all he did was act like an acrobat and throw knives.

They did the same thing to Yuigiri kinda.
They had her stand/run as a Miqote to somewhat hide the fact it was a new race coming.

No, but IIRC, when she was first added to the game they used Miqo'te running/movement animations and stances for her. I've even heard that her base model was originally a Miqo'te, which they just edited to make the tail and ears/horn different.

Then later on when the actual Au Ra models were added to the game, they changed her animations to more closely match her race.
