One massive way for the devs to spice up this game is to change from a tab targeting system to real time. The resources required and the relatively radical nature of such a change would probably be too much of a shock to SE however.
Thoughts?

This would not work, the game would have to be completely redesigned from the ground up. Which would probably include a new game engine too. The game would probably have to go down like it did for 1.0 when releasing 2.0. I don't think any mmo has ever been changed from one form to another. An mmo is usually designed to be either tab target or real time and cannot be switch from one to another.
Maybe the next Final Fantasy mmo will be real time. If they release another one that is, so maybe another 10 years from now?

While it does sound like a good idea on paper, im afraid changing he combat would alienate larger portions of the playerbase. Removing tab targeting wouldnt be "spicing it up" It would be changing the recipe.
Also isnt the reason we have the slower combat that consoles also can play. I wouldnt know, just a guess.
One of the main reasons I play this game is because it uses tab targeting. Removing it is hardly innovating, many new MMO's have moved to action combat. In my opinion, those games end up resulting in button smashing.

AND that is why I like XIV's combat system, it's not a button mash = win but more like use a GCD while weaving OGCD in between. Skills like Dark arts and Life surge is just a few examples.
A few people don't like XIV's combat due to it being too slow and they think it's a bad thing I don't see it that way. Not everything has to be fast to be good.

Mouse targeting abilities in MMORPGs is also a good system too. All they need to do with tab targeting in FFXIV is make it smarter, make it stop focusing in the stuff 50 malms away and target the one in your face.
TERA uses healing and mouse targeting, it is very interesting. best to test it out before you head straight into a dungeon. How does healing work without tab targeting? Would they get rid of it? Would it be strictly AE-based?
Yoshi recently said "we're not going to change the game into something it is not meant to be" so the chance of this happening is probably near 0%.
Anyways, the current netcode in the game probably wouldn't be able to handle it anyway. It would probably need a better update rate. Like in PvP, where it lets you use an ability but then errors you even though you think you're in range but apparently you aren't.

Can you explain your concept more clearly? Do you mean simply attacking a target you are facing, the closest target, or manually selecting a target each time you want to attack it with a mouse over?
If it's the former, you just screwed over all ranged classes. If it's the latter, for those of us who do not use the mouse in combat, it's a non starter, and I believe there's already a lot of work you can do with mouse over targeting in the custom macro system.

I love action combat in mmos, that said, the tab target system in FFXIV is a fundamental component of the game. While I would've loved it to be action combat from the off, at this late stage what you're asking for is an entirely new game, and as they've already rebuilt this game once I don't see it happening![]()
how about we change it into a turn based system while removing the ability to move during combat too?
no thanks to your suggestion though.
