    Something is missing...

I don't know if this was discussed before, but it's been on my mind ever since I really got into this game.

I feel like our characters....aren't really our characters. Sure, you can create back stories and roleplay, but MSQ crushes that a bit. While it's really impressive how se can make characters feel almost mysterious to you, it's kind of disappointing.

I'm seriously glad they've allowed us to choose more responses to events in HW. I only wish they'd use that in almost every cutscene.

This isn't limited to FFXIV, either. In almost every MMO I've played, there's been a "premade" personality rather than one YOU can create in MSQs.

That's just my opinion, anyway. Plus this is a mind dump lol

Being as story-driven as FFXIV is, it would be extraordinarily time-and-resource-consuming to design an MSQ system that allows for more freedom of character development. At best, your available responses could be, "Yeah! Let's do it!" or "This is a dog's bollocks, but all right, let's do it." Either way, you're going to do The Thing You're Being Asked To Do because the story necessitates it.

Me? I more or less enjoy "the story" and "my character" separately. There's the Warrior of Light and VIP Scion of the Seventh Dawn L'khora that everyone knows and loves and who speaks very little but always gets roped into doing things, and then there's the void hunter and connoisseur of fine Ul'dahn whiskey L'khora that only a handful of people know who says probably way too much sometimes.

I also feel like a 3rd wheel of the scions. Like I'm that friend that just shows up, hangs in the background. But everyone tolerates me cuz I'm rich.

That's true. Maybe not so much decision making (because it's of course added to the to-do list even if you say no), but responses. Or maybe even asking questions to NPCs when their doing their whole blues clues scenes lol. It'll take time but it's still something to hope for next few patches :,/

That sort of thing always frustrates me, because no matter what I select, I end up more concerned about wondering what replies the other options would have given me rather than following the version I do get to see.

When it happens in sidequests or job quests, I'll select one option, see the response, then abandon the quest in order to go back and do it with another option (even if that means having to also repeat battles or a ton of running around as well). But in the Main Scenario, we don't even have the option of abandoning the quest in order to try different responses, so anywhere we can't choose all of them is simply broken as it leaves parts of the game inaccessible.

Use the Unending Journey found in Inn Rooms or crafted for player housing to replay cutscenes and select the different choices.

For me it fits very fine. =)

I manage to create a good background for my char put in the MSQ very well.

The best part (and with luck) is when some quest really helps your background. In mine, Angely was suffering from dark curse (before heavensward was released), she did the Excalibur relic to contain that power to dominate her, but fails. it was the Dark Knight quests where you learn to control your dark power, that "saved" her for now.

Be the main character of your game really open for a lot of possibilities.

That works when it's available. But it only helps if (1) the choices are in a cutscene in the first place, since they can also happen during regular dialog, and (2) the cutscene is one of the few that SE selected as graphically impressive enough to actually include in the Unending Journey (since it doesn't include the simpler, more dialog-focused cutscenes). And I guess there's a third condition as well, that I have to be confident that it will be included there even knowing that many, if not most, cutscenes are excluded.

FF games have been like this for a long time, it allows them to write better stories.

I don't really feel the disconnect but I can see why others could!
