yup, gonna be a really popular feature I bet.
Yep, many other games have this same system, real popular.

Another way to remove this problem, is to make the server code not awful. Btw, math indicates it will boot you off after 25 min in my example.

That's not to say I actually want a system like this in XIV, just one way it could be done if server queues become a problem.

The server can't differentiate between someone who has no log interaction and someone who's just giving time for responses to what they said, for example if someone /shouts a party in forming or wanting to join, how would the game know the person is just waiting for replies or went afk? Logs are stored on your PC as well as the server, therefore there's always log interaction happening.

Same with movement, how do you know if someone decides to just stand/sit in one spot while /shouting versus someone who went afk?

That's the problem with kicking "afk" people from the game and why no MMO does it by default. FFXI had 10-30 minute threshold settable for when you're booted from game, but sometimes you have to afk for 10 minutes to do something around the house, why should the game kick you then and potentially prevent you from logging back in?

DC Universe has this and its the most anoying part of the game, I go to the store, have to relog, I have some food, I hate to relog, I hate it.

The problem will prolly go away with 2.0 when they have the new servers, I would say its a capacity issue on the popular servers like Besaid, Mysidia and Selb (i think there the biggest)

if your not at your computer then you shouldnt be logged in, its relatively simple.

with the exception of making a snack/food/toilet ect. hence why i said for like an hour.

and the server can easily detect if your sending messages in chat/ls/shout/tell ect. if you dont move, dont sent a message or use your menu for an hour then you should be removed from the game PERIOD!

so you'd have to log back in, tough. staying logged in while your asleep isnt fair to players in different time zones who are forced to wait because the server is full.

if it was full of people who was actually playing then its a different story, but the server shouldnt have 5/10/15% of its capacity taken up by inactive players.

its a feature in games i appreciate because it means i can actually play in my own timezone.

as for limiting the new character creation on servers which can hit full capacity, the problem with that is you would end up with times of the day/night when the server population is so low that you cant do any of the party required content.

Well FFXI didnt need this feature, people were logged in all day every day and there werent queues, it is a step back for every MMO that uses it, its not needed all they need is enough capacity and bandwidth for everyone, which is easy to do.

No MMO needs this feature they need servers that can serve the amount of users that play. All the servers that have this feature, if every subscriber logged on at once they would blow up cos they cant cope.

We have multiple servers because not everyone can fit on one server for various reasons beyond even just the technical ones. So making them so "everyone can fit on one server" is not easy or really possible.

If not everyone can fit on one server, obviously there is a limited number of people that can comfortably be on the same server. There is no 24/7 hour queue for Mysidia or Selbina. Every once and a while there is a queue because so many new people (and people from other servers) are creating characters on Selbina.

The queue encourages mostly brand new people to go to other servers, for the rest of the people it is a rare minor annoyance. I'd rather have it than lag everytime I go do anything not instanced.
