Why do I target things behind me when there's something right in front of my character? Or why do I target something way off in the distance when, once again, there is something directly in front of my character?

This gets very frustrating when fighting a large group of mobs but I can't target one close enough to me to be able to melee it.. Instead, I have to move my camera around and spam /targetnpc in hopes of targeting something even remotely close to me, or I have to run up to the mob I have targeted way in the background..

Regardless of my camera angle, I'd like to be able to target something directly in front of me (my character) 100% of the time, like in FFXI (ie: target the closest object in your character's line of sight). Ever since the new claim system allowed us to kill multiple mobs at once, this problem has become more and more troublesome.
