I like to imagine that each Warrior of Light/Ascian gets their own crystal of light that is their first and signifies their strengths as a champion of Hydaelyn/Zodiark. The canon Warrior of Light likely received water first to signify them as a cleanser of corruption and evil, since water is the the universal solvent. A different Warrior of Light could have easily received the element of water to signify them as a bastion for the preservation and restoration of life. I think in the long run though, any Warrior of Light could have any element.

What made Beatrix such a great enemy is that she was capable of, single-handedly, mowing down the party at any moment she chose. Before the first fight with her Beatrix boasts that she once killed a hundred knights single-handedly, and her combat skills certainly match that reputation. It's not dissimilar to the Warriors of Darkness, who thrash us during the "fight" in Loth ast Vath and are mopping the floor with us until Urianger steps in to even the scales. (Admittedly the WoDs had a manpower advantage at first, reversing the scales in the fights with Beatrix, but even so.)

At the same time, beneath her calm and confident facade Beatrix is rather conflicted about what she's doing. The Warriors of Darkness are similar - despite initial belief being that they had been blessed by Zodiark and were on a crusade to kill Hydaelyn, what's driving them is simple, blind desperation. Beneath the surface they take no joy in what they're doing, but with no other recourse had to broker a deal with Elidibus to try and save the First Shard. Amusingly despite Arbert calling Hydaelyn / Minfilia out on doing nothing despite their efforts and prayers, they get no answer as to why she did not act until we wormed our way to the Aetherial Sea (again) and fed her energy from six Crystals of Light.

... so in a way the Warriors of Darkness were our Beatrix. I admit I'm disappointed we didn't get some more back-and-forth with them, but... whatever. Hopefully we get some with Ilberd the Griffin over 4.0, now that our nemeses are gone.

Well they did not really trash us at Loth ast Vath imo. I mean we never really got the chance to fight and we had a echo vision that hindered us (somehow longer than the WoD). Thancred jumped between him and us so we never got the chance to prove ourself. In the 3.4 fight we also did not truly loose. I was moping the floor with them around three times till he used that holmgang. (Somehow able to bind all of us) We were also only four people against five so Urianger made it more fair. Alisea and Alphinaud might be able to fight on our side but I would say that those WoD are stronger than them so holding our own against them shows us me that we are quite good fighters. So I cant really see how they were mopping the floor with us there, just because the warrior caught us in his holmgang. If they didnt have the echo they would have been down after one round.

And I also dont see how they dont take joy in killing. We dont know them long enough to really say how the felt and the bard was looking forward to shooting Alphinaud with a poison arrow. For me that was not the look of a person that only does that out of necessity. The paladin also had quite the scary faces and outright tried to kill Y'shtola when we first met them instead of maybe talking with us first. I also dont believe that they wanted to kill Hydaelyn. They wanted another catastrophe to merge their world with our world, to at least save the aether of the people, instead of letting it turn into another void. We learned from them that too much Light or Darkness is bad so why would they want to take out the Light (and possible source of all life) if it means that the balance would be destroyed too? I do believe that it was quite hinted that she simply cant really act much on her own anymore (heck she was only able to speak with us by using Minfilia) thanks to all the things the Ascians do. As soon as she got some of her power back (I mean she is on the loosing side of the war) she immediately sent Minfilia with the WoD to save their world. So until SE shows that Hydaelyn is bad or horrible too I will stand by her side and see her as a Goddess that loves her children but is not free of mistakes and that is weak thanks to all of the fighting.

The WoD might be desperate but it does not mean that one has to kill the scions or us without even trying to talk it out.

    On topic:
Maybe there was no symbolic behind it and they just used the one crystal that was still missing, but someone somewhere had to decide which crystal each WoD should get so maybe they did have a reason to do so. I like the thought that the color is a lot like Hydaelyn and water is really important for life so maybe that the idea behind it.

That are my two cents. I find it interesting how different one can see the story. But thats not bad, it leaves us with the chance to have a nice discussion about it.

After learning about their true motivations, I felt the Warriors of Darkness' villainous personae were just coping mechanisms. They seem conflicted and to acknowledge their actions are extreme, but with no other recourse have to condemn our world to save their own. They know this is wrong, but as it is necessary... adopted the mannerisms and style a villain employs.

    But we're getting off-topic...

In FF1, the top pt member (default warrior) presents the water crystal infront of the King of Cornelia. I think in some other FF games, rhe water crystal is usually the first or one of the first to grant you its powers, given the association of water being soft and gentle etc, also the blue color which is the quintiessential crystal color in ff.

Even the ancient Crystal of Light appears to be that of water

I wonder what happened to it after Krile used it? Or is it in storage with Matoya.

I'm not so sure that is the case usually the Wind or Earth Crystals hold the most significance, with Wind I think winning by a thread; and both tend to be either the first or last crystal to be dealt with. In FF1 the characters start out with the crystals, but the order in which they have to "hunt" them down is Earth, Fire, Water, and Wind. In FF3 the order is Wind, Fire, Water, Earth. In FF5 the order was Wind, Water, Fire, Earth, and In FF9 while they weren't expanded upon as much as the other games, the only significant fight is the one for the Earth Crystal. Even in Bravely Default the spiritual successor to FF, the order of the Crystals is Wind, Water, Fire, Earth, and the main Character is Aligned with the Wind Crystal. FF4 is the only time this pattern isn't really followed, with the order of the Crystals being Water, Fire, Wind, Earth, but also in that came the Crystals play less of a significant than in the others, they are merely "treasures" to acknowledge capture of the associated kingdoms.

If anything us Having the Wind Crystal would make the most sense.

I like helping people with their Job ideas, it's fun to help them visuallize and create the job they'd like to play most. Plus I make my own too, I'll post them eventually.
