Make it happen SE.
Or i swear i'll use my MSpaint skills again.
And please! Talk to us! What have we done?
The game needs it.
It will raise the supscriptions from 950k to 1 million.
Trust me.

You have made me look so good... Phe...
Pirate + Mithra + Blade + Gun = My favorite kickass character!
Thanks! ^___^
I still want to go and find that gun halberd that nael dropped...
Having already implemented these in game, if only visually, I don't think SE will get away with not making them usable. They are pretty much the most coveted weapon in FF history.
Honestly, Implementation could be as simple as adding a slow ranged auto-attack to weapons. Maybe a double attack on Crits or something.
Personally, I think Lightnings Blade looks like crap, but I also thought that whole game was crap. I'm all about VIII and Squall's Gunblade. I would do almost anything to get that on my Character, even if it meant I had to be a Gladiator.

Depending on how their models are it would be crazy if blacksmith / goldsmith could learn how to add gun mechanism to objects.... Certain guns mechanisms would be like squals giving him more momentum for stronger attacks and movement between attacks, or others being literal shots.
Of course you'd have to add a bunch of other mechanisms or downsides so not -every- weapon had a gun attached to it.
Would add more model variety but like I said their system would be highly dependent on this idea.. I doubt it is an easy add, but an example would be like most FPS games which have visual mods to guns, Borderlands being the most extreme.
I liked the double attack suggestion, would work well with a Squal like gun blade, I hope they add abilities to weapons (passives, actives, or both like a a passive that adds double attacks sometimes or you can activate it for 100% double attack for 15 seconds 10 min cooldown). Or like in Dark Souls the item abilities could damage the item faster, always breaking my special ability items on nubs.
With others (and my) slot idea for materia I think you could add mechanisms easily as well. Say adding a gunblade takes up a slot, or a lot of other weird fun things (example below). There some weapons could have purple slots meaning both materia and mechanisms or blue for just materia, red for just mechanisms...
(Blue) (Blue) (Purple)
Raging Fire II, Titan Strength IV, Materia Capacitor (enhances other materia by 15%)
(blue) (Red) (Red)
" " , Gun Mechanism (two red slots)
(purple) (red)
Sword Catcher (on counters/parries lets you activate an ability that disarms the enemy), Aether Furnace (burns aether to create a magical dot on attacks)

Lol nice picture!
Altought in my weapon mechanics research the rifle tube is to short to even cause the bullet to go in a straight path with enough rotation. Leaving it to make an unpredictable conical "AoE" where it can hit a foot or the head, to not hitting anything. But, can be deadly in "CC".
Besides being a good picture for affictioneted people of the gunblade, it still lacks of better research, altought it would look good hanging in a wall full of relics. XD
So since I was bored today, my brother and I talked alot about what job would be interesting, and we both like the Idea of a gunblade user. That being said, what I would like to see is a quest called "infiltrate the 7th legion" or something like that where you receive job/class quest from Cid and it involves temporarily joining the Garlean empire and enlisting in the 7th legion and upon completing some of their quests, you recieve the job/class of legionaire/gunblade user.
As a job I could see it being based on musketeer and Gld. Be able to use abilities like fast blade and barrage or volley, but also have unique abilities like possibly using different strength elemental cartridges. IE, "Magnum class, thunder elemental cartridge"
Job description:"While possessing the Sharpness of a musketeer he never hesitates to get up close and personal, diving headfirst into the fray. Preferring to stay nimble on his feet, his choice of armor is light yet must also have the bracing necessary to withstand the heavy recoil of his Gunblade. His use of elemental cartridges makes him an expert at exploiting the weakness of his foes."
And here are a couple sketches I created. The second being essentially a mini aetheryte cannon in the guise of a transforming great sword that I've dubbed a "Heavy GunBlade." I'll feel free to dream away until ARR goes live.
