What would you do if you THINK you see inappropriate name?

Hi all.

Today I found myself in a big dilemma.

Friends in my Linkshell have been pointing out and laughing at a character's name of someone on my server. The first name sounds so much like the full form of insult word Mofo (but, like, kiddie pronunciation, you know, strong lisp). And their last name....pronounces exactly like a word in my language which would directly translate into "d**k head."

My brain keeps debating to itself back and forth.


Report it because it's bad!

No, it might be some weird language, like Chinese or Korean!

But it's hard to have such coincidence. He must have done it on purpose!

But what if he's just a foreigner who was using his language's name? Reporting on him would be mean.

First name really, really looks super suspicious, he must have meant mofo.

Maybe it has its own meaning in his language. Me not knowing it, or it sounding similar to other languages' obnoxious word doesn't mean it doesn't exist in his language.

It's not good to let him walking around with that name, it will humiliate my country.

But if I don't tell or don't translate it to anyone, other people will never know what it means!



So I can't decide what to do.

I would probably try to forget about him and do nothing. It would be a bad bully to report him based on my assumption alone.

But out of curiosity, have anyone around here experienced such unsure moment? Also, I wonder what would happen to a person whose name is reported to be inappropriate. Force-change of name?

I heard stories from FFXI where people who got reported for inappropriate name was forced to delete his character and start over again. It's.....too....harsh, I think? But at the same time I also heard stories of people who made rude name and was caught, then was given a chance to rename their character.

Anyone with a inappropriate name would have to restart i don't think ffxiv right now can even allow name change due to all the issue the servers and the game itself have.

If you want you can report him he would have to delete his Char that if you even get a real GM lol and not just a nice letter telling you to go to the website and report him there.

I've never tried to call a GM in FFXIV. LOL. Do they make us go to a website on every Help-desk option?

Also the real solution is to not do anything until he like KSes you or something. Then you report him. Is one player's stupid name really ruining your fun that much?

It's not ruining my fun but I have to admit seeing someone walking around with a name like "Muthfecka Dickhead" (this is not his exact name though) does make my fingers itch.

I can't disclose any of his names because his first and last names are both unique for all servers. It would instantly give him away. But his first name is similar to my example above, just so you get the picture.

When I first started my character name was "Dixie Normus". It got flagged as inappropriate one day and when I logged in I was prompted to change my name before loging in. I didn't have to restart my character or anything, just change my name.

If it really makes you uncomfortable, then just flag it and SE will decide if it is inappropriate or not. Don't be afraid to speak up if it makes you feel uneasy. Chances are it is making others feel that way too.

Sorry it happened to you. Your name was just a funny pun, in my opinion. It's not like obviously rude at all.

It's not just 2 words I don't like, I was saying it sounds extremely obnoxious.

Want to report it? Nope. This is only half true. I am undecided and quite confused of what to do or how to judge the situation, as well as feelig curious as to what will happen to a reported person, thus I post this thread.

Also, I am not American. Not even close. I assume you didn't even read my post carefully, else you would have known my language is not English. But thanks for the opinion.

Seems with all the responses you had, you should have came to a reasonable decision by now. I sure hope you reported that player by now because if you didn't then you're just shouldering the burden on someone else by not making a stand. This is a MMO for mature players who want to have fun. There's counter measure for profanity but limited on mature content.

That being said, believe in your principles because a bad word in english(or something sounding like it) means the same anywhere on this planet. It may not be spelled or even written the same but you know what I mean. What sounds bad only translates to bad/offensive.

If it's a child doing this, put that child in their place. If its a adult trying to be funny, pity him and have the last laugh.

Most Americans i feel would not care really..atleast i could care less about someones virtual name lol reporting it would probably just be a waste of ur time really, i can imagine anyone with a name like ur describing would just find another vulgar name anyway. Those people will always be around just ignore it and dont let one person ruin any enjoyment u have in the game.
