As someone who plays both, I'd say they both have their pros and cons and yes, WoW has and always will be competition for FFXIV. FFXIV has certain people in the community who think that FFXIV is perfect, and that WoW/FFXI/etc. are all horrible. Suggest an idea from such games and wait until you get more than a few of those responses.

FFXIV winning in "fluff" area, and WoW winning... well, with everything that isn't fluff. Speaking of Legion specifically, it does everything right. The questing is amazing, the main story isn't all that (barely exists actually) but all the little side stories of each region are interesting, there was never a moment I felt truly bored unlike Heavensward questing where it felt like I was playing pre-Wratch WoW in how much of a bore questing was. There's so much good voice acting in Legion, people say FFXIV is the story focused MMORPG but Legion really spins that on its head. Most quests aren't filler, like in FFXIV, sure there's kill and collect but they're packed with good reasoning and apart from Highmountain, don't have you killing bugs or what have you.

Suramar is fantastic, one of the most beautiful cities I've seen in a game and even with their 15+ year old engine it blew me away. This isn't to mention the amount of questing content it has, not just "collect this" quests, but actual entertaining quests with story lines, it does slow down near the end due to the reputation gate but that's MMOs for you. The dungeons are easily equal in size to a 24 man FFXIV raid, including visual variety. The Halls of Valour blew me away especially. I haven't raided yet as I'm waiting for friends to hit 110 and gear up, but I expect the raids will better than the dungeons.

There are a few things I'd like to see come into FFXIV from legion, the open world you mentioned is a huge one. An open world makes an MMO feel like an MMO, as it stands FFXIV feels like many separate instances with no real connection, there's no feeling of a world but rather separated pieces of land. If I hadn't looked at a map of Eorzea I wouldn't be able to tell where anywhere was, all I knew is that I could teleport to everywhere I wished to teleport to, or go through a loading screen and be moved kilometres away but it's all the same. The questing, please don't make the same mistakes you did with ARR and Heavenswarwd, the journey to level cap doesn't have to be a long one. Legion is short and sweet and I'll remember it for a long time because of that, meanwhile Heavensward was filled with tedium, from gathering points to allow me to fly only to move onto the next zone, forcing me to do every side quest and even then not have enough EXP to move on with the MSQ, forcing me to dungeon grind, etc.

I could say more, but I feel the only thing that must be said is that we need a glamour log. I complained about fluff and all, but WoW's collection system is the best thing since sliced bread and I'd love to have it in FFXIV.

WoW's combat system is honestly a lot simpler, just much faster. Besides that, I doubt it would ever come to consoles considering addons like DBM are now mandatory for raiding (I believe the development team creates mechanics with that addon in mind).

I agree with your points, especially the above one. Sadly FFXIV is being held back a lot by the PS3. WoW is able to expand on areas like Open world, FFXIV cannot do this due to Console limitations.
To give you an example, idyllshire and the Dravanian Hinterlands were supposed to be one zone..however they pushed things to the limit and were not able to join them on the same map.

Hopefully in 4.0 they will drop PS3 support and then start working on building up zones and removing zone lines.
