I have a question: with the release of 3.4 patch, do the house demolitions have been reactivated?

The timer has been unpaused. Check whenever you can as they get demo'ed at random times.

The timer has been paused for some time now. During that period (approx 5 months) additional days have not accumulated towards being demolished.

You don't. The game purposefully does not tell you the time when a house will be demolished so that people can not camp them.
You just have to check the wards whenever you can to see if something has opened up and hope to get lucky.

Yep. So far I've come across one, last night and it was a very good lot. Announced it to my FC, then on to my friends list, and finally my linkshells. Amazingly no takers. It was gone this morning so someone spotted it. I was baffled at the sheer number of players that don't have the gil for a small lot.
