This didn't work for me.I cannot believe it but I found a fella that had a fix for this.

VPN was easy to install, and as soon as I had a connection, I effortlessly updated the game/launcher and got the patch.
Hope it helps!
Oh bummer - nothing else was working for me, and I was a bit reluctant to shut off my internet connection and rely on a connection in Singapore! But, it worked a charm for me.
I had that this morning. Steam install. (If that matters)
What I learned is... oddly the files never were released from use. (Steam never seems to close things right eh?)
A reboot of the PC solved EVERYTHING. I didnt get the "Unable to patch patch files" message anymore. So if you havent rebooted your PC. Do so. =)
Yeah I saw that. I found my issue. I just downloaded the client and not the client with plugin. Also, when you connect to a server, choose a Japan one. I tried choosing a US based server and kept getting disconnected.Did you see the lil guide he added to show you how to use the VPN? http://www.vpngate.net/en/howto_softether.aspx
Thank you so much for posting that. I can now play FFXIV.
same here.. I dont use any vpn tools etc.
Do you think this launcher problem will be fixed later today? I'm not installing anything or changing any of my settings, this usually leads to far bigger problems than not being able to play. I'm still a new user, not sure how SE usually handle this.
Some free vpn servers etc. are known for grabbing datas transfered there. Passwords etc.
A re install seems to work for me. but every big patch this? this cant be a option.

I just tried the following and it worked for me, allowing me to update the launcher and download patch 3.4.
Navigate to your game install location on your drive, locate two folders: boot, game. Right click each folder > properties > click the 'read only ' box so that the field is empty. ( No tick or little square).
Launch the game through the ffxivboot.exe and it, hopefully, will connect you to the launcher and thus patch the game.
