I'm slightly confused hope someone wouldn't mind explaining how it works.
What I understood was that you need to press R2+L2 at the same time twice to "pop" the bar forward. Or can you press L2 or R2 twice to pop it?

If I understood the patch notes right, you have to double-tap the buttons to make the new crossbar appear. Like double-clicking on your computer. I forgot if it was L1/R1 or L2/R2 though.
My understanding of it is that you simply doubletap L2 for the left side and R2 for the right, you don't need to do them together and I don't even know if that would work. I'm not sure if it would stay open until you a) select an action or b) perform another hotbar action, such as holding L2 for the normal left side of the hotbar for example.
My understanding is the double tap of one button, I do feel I cant put combat abilities on the W bar though as it seems it will be too slow.
I'll try it out and decide, but at this point I'm thinking Mounts and Enter (Hello) and Exit (Thanks) dungeon Macros will occupy those spaces.
I took one look at the thing and immediately thought of how I can finally have room for pet commands without breaking up my double tap hotbar set I've been using since 2.0 days.
It's a Christmas Miracle.
You haven't been using the expanded bar we currently have? (Hold L2 then R2 or vise versa)
I have. I slot skills like sprint, teleport, food, mount, LB, and certain utility skills that vary per job.
It was only Scholar, my old main, that I felt encumbered as you really need to be able to micro the fairy on top of all your regular moves.
