Honestly, I don't feel like we need to see Kefka. The Warring Triad themselves are enough FFVI fanservice, in my opinion - and, even better, they help to fill out something that was kind of a letdown for me in FFVI itself. As much as I loved the game, I was kind of bemused by the fact that you wind up battling the three gods responsible for all magic - and all three of them are pretty much minor characters and pushovers to battle. FFXIV is finally giving them the spotlight that they deserve, rather than relegating them to being stooges of a madman clown.

I'd never actually considered the possibility that the tower was meant to represent Kefka's tower in some way. That's actually quite a cool observation. What might become of it though is anyone's guess.

Where did you see them say that?

I guess we'll find out soon enough. They'll announce the expansion at the first Fan Fest (or so I assume) and then release more details in the subsequent two events. Based on how long away the expansion turns out to be I imagine we can work out how many patches there will be.

Don't forget the fact 2.55 had almost as much story content as 2.5 did, acting as the proper finale of the 2.x arc, and just this last mid patch, 3.35, had a huge chunk of gameplay content in the form of Palace of the Dead.

It isn't that unlikely that the Warring Triad story could be wrapped up in a 3.55 patch.

Sorta on topic but I noticed that Sophia's statue and FFVI sprite look really different compared to her new model, it could just be me though, makes me wonder if Sophia was designed later on at some point during 3.X Sephirot looks pretty accurate to his sprite and statue.

She probably has been fully designed later on yeah. The statues themselves though look almost identical to the sprites used in FFVI. ^^

It could also be the whole Dark Lumina from Brave Fencer Musashi trope: the Triad were sealed away as guardians to protect the coming of a greater, more powerful evil, and by defeating/releasing them from this realm, Kefka is released.
I believe one of the running theories is that Regula van Hydrus manages to find the power that he is looking for and is able to harness some of the warring triads power to become a "Kefka" primal. Him killing the emperor would be a stretch, but not out of the realm of possibility.

Honestly I'd prefer there to be a unique twist. If they wanted to pull a 'Gestahl' then they should have simply used the old Emperor for that. He even looked the part from what we saw of him in artwork. They brought a new Emperor in and having really done a whole lot with him yet - so having him killed off for the sake of a FF6 reference would be a kick in the teeth. If Regula absorbs the Triad's power I'd actually find it more interesting if it enhanced his drive to protect and advance the Emperor's goals. I never really liked Kefka much though - he was amusing for a while but he got old pretty quickly.

Like I said, it is a stretch, I was more linking the fact that the whole situation is already a FF6 reference, the Emperor and his "minion" are docked on the floating continent looking for the warring triad/ultimate power and Regula has gone off on his own agenda, just like how it is in FF6. Personally I would also like the emperor to not be killed, rather betrayed by Regula, and the rest of the plot play out as predicted (all warring triad defeated, Regula rises as a "god", we defeat Regula).
