Xande from FF3 was made to be an Allagan Emperor, it wouldn't be unreasonable if Kefka was his court jester who tried to steal the Triad's power but was stopped/imprisoned along with the Triad. It could also be the whole Dark Lumina from Brave Fencer Musashi trope: the Triad were sealed away as guardians to protect the coming of a greater, more powerful evil, and by defeating/releasing them from this realm, Kefka is released.

I believe one of the running theories is that Regula van Hydrus manages to find the power that he is looking for and is able to harness some of the warring triads power to become a "Kefka" primal. Him killing the emperor would be a stretch, but not out of the realm of possibility.

Honestly I'd prefer there to be a unique twist. If they wanted to pull a 'Gestahl' then they should have simply used the old Emperor for that. He even looked the part from what we saw of him in artwork. They brought a new Emperor in and having really done a whole lot with him yet - so having him killed off for the sake of a FF6 reference would be a kick in the teeth. If Regula absorbs the Triad's power I'd actually find it more interesting if it enhanced his drive to protect and advance the Emperor's goals. I never really liked Kefka much though - he was amusing for a while but he got old pretty quickly.

Like I said, it is a stretch, I was more linking the fact that the whole situation is already a FF6 reference, the Emperor and his "minion" are docked on the floating continent looking for the warring triad/ultimate power and Regula has gone off on his own agenda, just like how it is in FF6. Personally I would also like the emperor to not be killed, rather betrayed by Regula, and the rest of the plot play out as predicted (all warring triad defeated, Regula rises as a "god", we defeat Regula).

I'd like to think the writers might be playing the long game with the Triad story. If Regula is to become a Kefka-esque character then it would be somewhat anti-climactic for us to defeat him as soon as he acquires the Triad's power. It would be a lot more satisfying IMO if he got what he wanted then defeated us, only to go on to become the primary villain of the Garlemald expansion pack or something.
