I literally just posted two suggestions on how SE can make me happy (no idea about anyone else) with more long term character progression, that shouldn't negatively impact casual or new players... I was very much thinking of both sides when I came up with that suggestion...
You've also just highlight one of the problems with this game, IMO... It has "hardcore" raid content, and then casual content... What about the mid-core? The one that should arguably be the biggest group? 2.# didn't really have any of that, 3.0 was promised to improve on that front, but all we've really gotten is Diadem and Palace of the Dead, both content I would not describe favorably and almost certainly would label as "casual" anyway... Relics remain the only real thing close to mid-core IMO, and Yoshida seems intent on dumbing those down further, not expanding upon them and making them great... I really wish he'd look at Final Fantasy XIs Mythic weapons, and implement something similar... Something like that could add a lot of value to content IMO, Anima weapons just has me grinding Esoterics off PvP, it's pathetic... ToAU was the golden age of Final Fantasy XI for a reason, it added lots of unique content and backed them up with purpose... XIV will have a hard time doing the same with purely vertical progression, but Relics at least could add more value to stuff like Deep Dungeons and Exploration Missions... Right now they're all just disconnected and effectively replace each other... Palace of the Dead, for example, is a replacement for grinding Nidhogg for a weapon... I'd very much like something that instead ties this stuff together...
This game actually has a lot of content I might perhaps enjoy more, if only it had a solid purpose... This is one reason why Wondrous Tails actually has my attention, it provides some reason to go back and do things like Binding Coil or Leviathan (EX)... It's not as great as it could be, but it's a start I guess...
