Buying the expansion for my Mom

So I finally got my mom to try FFXIV and she loves it! I want to buy her the expansion as a gift since she's almost level 50. Just needed to clarify a few things first. She got the original game from steam, but never downloaded the steam client (just used the code), so do I still need to buy Heavensward from steam? Or can I upgrade straight from the mog station?

you can get it straight from the mog station.

For example, my Realm Reborn product key was on Steam...i transferred the account over to PS4 no problem and bought Heavenward from SE

Sorry but you can't 'transfer' your game account between platforms. The account itself is platform agnostic; you just added a PS4 key to the same account and bought the PS4 expansion. Your Steam key for PC is still registered to that account.

@OP: If you bought the game on Steam originally then I believe you are restricted to buy all future expansions for the PC platform via Steam as well. You can still buy console versions elsewhere to register to the same account if you wish but any non-Steam keys for PC will no longer be compatible. This is why most people advise not buying the game on Steam, but I suppose that's not helpful to you now.

That's not semantics! You're misunderstanding what the OP is asking. She bought the original ARR PC key from Steam. If she wants to buy an expansion for her mother on PC as well then it HAS to be bought via Steam. IIRC the Mogstation won't even let you upgrade since it will recognise the Steam key and force you to buy via Steam.

OP hasn't said anything about transferring to PS4... (or even mentioned PS4 at all!)

As others, like Alberel, have written since the original PC code used was the Steam code, the account is now internally recognised that the PC licence is from Steam so if they want the PC expansion, it will also need to be from Steam.

Just keep in mind she can't play Heavensward until she has completed the entire 2.0 story and updates (patches). That will take a bit before she can access the expansion. It's not simply a matter of hitting 50.

oh, I know But I want her to be able to get all the experience once she reaches those post 50 quests, so she can go into the expansion at 52 or 53.

Cool and it's nice of you to do that. It must also be nice playing with your Mom. I know we have a couple of those couples in our FC and it's pretty sweet. I'm sure she'll love it when she hits Foundation. I loved leveling into the new expansion both with my main and with my alts.
