I started in 1.0 as a Black Mage purely because it seemed like the best fit for me. I generally always play mage classes, and while blowing stuff up was fun, I don't think it was ever going to be for me. When I finally got it to level 50 I wanted to go straight into another class and chose Bard because I liked the AF. It felt amazing being able to keep songs up on party members (including two songs at the same time if they were spread enough), and being able to support the party with Cure, Protect, Stoneskin and Raise really made me fall in love with the job. It was all the fun of a mage job, with lots of support abilities, and being able to add physical dps whilst looking cool as hell with the bow and arrow (nothing is more satisfying than the old Rain of Death animation, I really miss my laser beams)
Then 2.0 happened and they reduced the job to a generic Archer; magic was no longer available, songs became generic 'auras' reduced to a single 'press for MP' button requiring little thought or positioning, the player is actively encouraged to use songs as little as possible due to damage penalties (Foe Requiem aside), and despite songs constantly guzzling MP there was no form of innate MP regeneration. Since then I don't think I've ever found a job that really 'fits'. The Wanderer's Minuet was a pretty great edition as I enjoy being a 'caster' (even though it's not nearly the same lol), but not enough to sway me. The Warden's Paean seemed like a great step in the right direction, but then they made it another 'press for support' button that requires little but a pair of eyes to use effectively and knowledge of what can/can't be Esuna'd, but since it's normally relegated to being a glorified Warrior dps cooldown I doubt anyone would notice if you didn't use it.
I really enjoyed healing, but the game's design towards healers focusing on maximizing dps during healing downtime instead of having access to abilities that aid the party really puts me off from investing in them.
I'm still waiting for that elusive job that just clicks with me the way Bard did before, and I'm holding out hope it'll come soon. Until then, I'll still enjoy playing the many jobs the game has to offer, but I could never invest myself in them enough to call them my favourite / main job.
