How did you discover your favorite job class?

I recently had a change of heart, and swapped to astrologian. I thought it might be fun to start a thread of job class discovery stories, so I'll start. I discovered astrologian out of pure boredom, after realizing for whatever reason I never made it past level 31. When I actually took the time to learn it, I realized all this time I had been using the wrong class. It's the perfect pace for me, beautiful, and it fits likes a glove! I was made for this role. :'3 How did you discover your job? What makes it interesting to you?

I tried it in PvP and found it very entertain to play.

I always love fast-paced gameplay in video games.

I started playing about a month after HW was released. I chose WHM because it was thematically the closest to the class I mained from my previous MMO, and that all my friends said the fastest way to learn how this game worked was to pick a healer as your first class. Eventually, I started leveling all the other classes in order to pick a DPS class for myself on the side (as I quickly realized with DRK that tanking simply wasn't really for me, though I still maxed DRK just for the story). I picked Archer/Bard first because I always had an attraction to bows, though the complete shift in gameplay once I got Wanderer's Minuet caused me to drop the class for about two months after capping BRD. At the time, I didn't think I'd ever pick up Bard again.

I leveled DRG next. I enjoyed the class up until Blood of the Dragon became a thing, and it was also then that I started to realize that melee classes in general weren't my thing at all (and leveling NIN/MNK much later didn't do anything to ease that, I dropped both at 54). Then I leveled the other casters to see how they worked, and I ended up enjoying all of the healers, though I still prefer WHM. I really liked BLM too, up until I got Enochian.

I went back to BRD, and then, I think something clicked. I felt that during the time that I leveled the other classes, I had gotten much better at playing the game in general, and suddenly Minuet cast times were no longer a big deal to me. I could wreck things from a distance without having to worry about positionals. I didn't have to adhere to a strict rotation in order to keep buff timers up or else risk losing so much damage. I also realized the value in Bard's support songs. I could literally pull victory from the jaws of defeat with my songs, whether it be enhancing magic damage enough to push us through a DPS check or helping a healer low on MP get off a vital cure to save a party member in time. I could preemptively throw Paean on a Warrior to ensure Berserk pacification isn't a thing so that they wouldn't have to scream at the healers to cleanse it. I jumped for joy when they changed Paean to an instant cast that removed a debuff too - it meant I had more support to relieve stress off of the healers. Indeed, I saved many people from dying a horrible death to vomit in Void Ark due to Paean's new instant cast nature.

I don't know exactly what happened, but that feeling of discovery is wonderful.

I played a Fury Warrior in WoW.
This game forces me to tank if I want to swing around an axe, so I went for the next best thing:
    Rogues.

I played Dragoon cause it is an iconic FF job and lance focused classes are pretty rare in MMOs or RPGs in general. When 2.4 came I immediately changed to ninja cause I love ninjas.
I still main ninja, but as I am leveling my other classes I realize that I really like being a healer. Mostly because of the control it gives me. Heal a party member, buff another, dps this enemy, all of this from a nice far away place where I can see everything. And astrologians look great. Shame ninjas can't heal.

    1. I punched some stuff, and found that I was decently durable for a DPS (more so in 1.2). (MNK)

    2. Support, and memories of pre-cross-class nerfs. (BRD)

    3. Needed more oGCDs and damaging mana usage for speedruns. (DRK)

    4. Wanted more to do as a healer; just maximizing my dps or my tank's wasn't cutting it anymore. So, cards. (AST)

Tbh, I play everything but SMN fairly regularly, and like them about equally (even SMN's not horrible, just... wasteful, imo). Those were the only ones for which my liking came at unexpected points, though. (Oh... I don't need TP for tanking... AND I can deal damage and can ranged attack?! Casters, we're sprint-pulling this grind dungeon.)

I picked Gladiator because my friend wanted to be a Thaumaturge and we wanted to start in the same place and play together.

I've stuck with PLD main ever since.
