As the topic says is it possible to get mirrors in game as a furniture item? Hanging mirrors, full body mirrors. Maybe funhouse mirrors? I think they'd be a great addition.

While I'm sure it's possible (and I would love to have them) I imagine they'll run into the same issue with mirrors that they've had with aquariums. Due to the way the engine handles complex shaders for transparency and reflections it seems to be difficult for the devs to implement them for non-static objects. Since we can move furniture around the shaders applied to them behave a little strangely and can be quite intensive on the system. I imagine it's definitely doable but likely a fair bit more complicated than it would appear. Maybe they could do something like this after they're done with the aquariums?
I would honestly be fine with a blank slab of silver that just reflected light sources. Working mirrors are notoriously hard for game developers to put in games, and that issue is extremely compounded in an MMO where players could put down multiple mirrors anywhere in an area. But we don't need fully functional mirrors to have great looking furnishings.
For example, there's an amazing looking vanity in Haukke Manor, but the mirror is broken. They can't give us the vanity, because they would have to put a working mirror on it, and mirrors are hard to implement. But who cares about that?! I don't need to see my character's reflection, I just want an awesome vanity in my house! Yes, it would look a little silly having a "mirror" that didn't have a reflection, but I would much rather have that then not have mirrors at all.
Haha they would indeed probably have to 'cheat' if they ever did give us mirrors, they'd have to be broken like in Haukke Manor or fake and be a static silver/white colour just for show. Actual reflections are really computationally expensive to implement in games, a lot has been written about it out there if you're bored and care to google it.
Sounds very cool and would be awesome to have!! I agree it does sound a bit complex so I wouldn't get my hopes up, but never hurts to ask!
an aside: Would still like a feature to frame and hang actual fc, party, solo, scenic screenshots!
♥ MORE HIGH HEELS + INSTANCED HOUSING! ♥!
Honestly I feel that it does hurt to ask, having a fully functioning mirror housing item would take up so much of the development resources, for very little payoff. If it was an imitation mirror (with a blank texture rather than a reflection) that would be fine, but if you start getting into reflections then that is too much time spent on something with little payoff.
Asking doesn't equate to them taking immediate (or any) action however. They're well aware of the time it would take to go into such a thing and would only do so if they felt they could get more use out of it. Some nice shiny wall platters of various shapes would probably satisfy most people's desire for a mirror.Honestly I feel that it does hurt to ask, having a fully functioning mirror housing item would take up so much of the development resources, for very little payoff. I'd like mirrors but definitely not ones that would actually reflect back as that would be a complete smash in the face for a lot of peoples graphics cards/systems. A simple light reflecting silver sheet or broken mirrors would be awesome though.
Just adding this here since it's kind of related, but I realized today that the green portion of the Mog gun actually has a basic reflection map texture applied to it.
What's kind of interesting is that there are actually multiple textures that get swapped out depending on what location you're carrying the weapon in. It's very basic, but still I didn't expect them to put so much detail into something most people likely won't notice. I suggest using right click > view image to see these in full size.
Inside a Mist style apartment room you can see it's reflecting what appears to be an empty Mist style room. Of course it doesn't reflect my actual furniture - that would be pretty insane - so it's just an empty room template texture.
Inside a Glade style cottage it reflects an empty Glade style room. All these aren't static textures too, if you pan the camera around the gun it actually warps quite realistically.
This is what you see outdoors in Mist. It's hard to see from a low res screenshot but it's actually using a night sky texture, you can just make out some clouds on the right edge of the glass.
Yes! A standing mirror is one of the items that I would I really like to have for my apartment besides a Victorian bathtub!
Yes! This is totally ok with me!
