I just want to be clear about a few things to try and avoid any confusion.

    1) Even though this may sound daunting, you have only just scratched the surface of content by just hitting 50. Completely ignoring the option to level other classes, you still have probably 40+ hours of story content and probably twice as much in side quests and dungeons.

    2) Once you hit 50, that means nothing. You first goal should be to complete you level 50 Job quest to get your final ability, which in the case of Dragoon, is Dragonfire Dive; which is a nice AoE cooldown. Once you've completed that, I would finish the end of 2.0 story. You'll know when its over, but just in case its not obvious, it will be after you complete Praetorium and defeat Ultima Weapon.

    3) After this is completed, there are probably around 2 dozen side quests that will open up optional dungeons, relic weapon, Primals (Hard Mode), raids, etc. These are optional. You also then have 5 patches of story content to go through until you finally complete the main story of A Realm Reborn. It will also be obvious when this ends.

    4) Once you've completed the main story up to that point, you will then be gated to continue until you buy the expansion. But this doesn't mean you can't play. At this point, you can level other classes, do any sidequests and dungeons you've come across, complete your relic weapon, sight seeing logs, etc.

    5) The final thing to note which others have said is, you will not gain any experience, level your class, gain new abilities, or anything of that nature unless you have purchased the expansion. It is my recommendation that if you plan on playing into Heavensward, to purchase it immediately. This way, as you're doing all those things I've previous listed after you've completed the 2.0 story, you will continue to gain experience points and level your class. This is an advantage to you. When those of us who completed ARR before the expansion released, we all went into Heavensward at level 50. If you get the xpac now, by the time you get to Heavensward, you'll already be 52 or so (Maybe higher?) and have a slight head start in that content.
