That aside, what would happen to my account if I really did decided just to not play until I purchase 2.0 for the PS3? Will my character/account be deactivated after a certain amount of time?
I'm not sure what you mean by "pointless," so I can't really comment too much on that. I will say, though, that some of the content offered now will not be available in 2.0. But certainly, things will apparently be quite different after.

As for the last question, they said in the live letter that they're going to preserve all customer data, regardless of whether you pay the subscription fee:
    9:18
Q: How much character data will be transferred over to Version 2.0? For example, quest and company history, achievements, etc. Also, will my character data still be preserved even if I haven't been paying subscription?
A: For character data, basically everything: levels, EXP, gil, achievements, quests, and history will be transferred, so don't worry.

However, I'd like to warn you about two things. In the case of quests, those you've just received or completed will be carried over properly. But for the steps in-between, there is a chance that progress will be lost.
The other thing I'd like to mention is the inventory. Inventory space was expanded in 1.19. However, in 2.0 we will be introducing the mannequin system where players can store their equipment, so we are thinking about reverting to the 100-slot inventory in the future. We won't be deleting the items—they'll instead be stored with NPCs, and players will have to retrieve them once Version 2.0 arrives. We'll announce details as they're ironed out, so please don't worry.

With regards to the subscription fee, if you bought the game in the past and played at some point, we feel it is our responsibility to preserve your character data, regardless of whether you're paying a subscription. So please rest assured, it'll still be there in 2.0.
So, while I'd prefer that you continue to play -- Come on! You know you want to! -- your character data won't be wiped if you decide to wait until 2.0.

I would guess that I will at some point. Just depends on the mood I'm in. By pointless I guess I mean how much will carry over. Like okay maybe it would be a good idea to get a class to lvl 50 before then. But if i get say a gladiator to 50 does that mean I'll have a lvl 50 warrior when 2.0 comes around?

They said you'd keep everything, all class levels and items/currency/progress, with the possible exception of in-progress quests. If the 7th Umbral Era's world changes ends up changing the landscape or world enough that some quests cannot happen story-wise, they would be cancelled or reset. So don't worry about your character getting deleted or otherwise rolled back in any way. They know that many people are going to be holding out until 2.0 and not holding onto their data at all would be shooting themselves in the foot in the worst way.

September to october: 2.0 beta starts.

They don't expect us to wait a year without more content. They only expect us to read the documents released before bitching about the dev roadmap.
I don't think Secret addressed the OP to the devs, but rather to people that reply to other forum posters' cry for content with the idea that they shall be satisfied when 2.0 is here. I think he/she's trying to say that plenty of content has been announced by SE for previous patches and therefore is expected to be coming before 2013.

But of course, I could have misread his post.

I don't think we should have to wait any longer for this game to get any good. I have been here since alpha so that's a year and a half of waiting. It's getting better but now that we have to pay and pay through a payment system that's broken?

If you get Gladiator to 50 you might have access to the PLD quest unless you also need Marauder leveled a bit to obtain the job quest. If you want Warrior you'll have to level Marauder to at least 30 to gain access to the job quest. What they did say about jobs though is that jobs are pretty much a concept where you define your class more and you gain abilities based on doing the job quest. As a gladiator if you are in PLD mode you will obtain experience for Gladiator since Gladiator and Paladin basically share the same level.

To put it bluntly the job=class. Job is just a means to give your character a more defined role in combat, where as classes give you the option to be more flexible with your abilities.

    doctor: well your terminally ill
    you: whats wrong with me?
doctor: well you'll have to wait untill we find a cure for me to tell you

why not just say what the illness is?

    translating that to FFXIV

poster 1: i want more content, blah blah blah, cry cry cry
poster 2: wait until 2.0 is out

    it should be...

poster 1: i want more content, blah blah blah, cry cry cry
poster 2: well 1.20 has new content and features being brought it, theres a roadmap under "this" link, check it out and you will see that they have alot of work but my the time 2.0 is out it'll be a whole new game and we have more patches coming before then and new content being brought in before 2.0 as well.

    get what i mean?
In your example the poster is the patient and the replier is the doctor, but why should the replier be the doctor? They're not paid to give you information, they're doing it voluntarily. You can't seriously expect someone who is not getting paid to give exact, detailed information, especially when its already been outlined by the real doctor, Yoshi-P.

I understand not everyone wants to keep up with every piece of info about the game, but is it so unreasonable to ask that they do a little research on a topic that has been outlined already and is very easy to find on the lodestone instead of posting about it? People don't want to give the same explanation fifty times, and they don't have to, so why would they? All it takes is a little effort to find the answers, but apparently that's too much to ask.

What you want is for the people who actually took the effort to find out what's going to happen to give even more effort to write up an explanation, so the people who don't want to read can be lazy.

Please don't promote laziness, or this game will fall fast.
