Companies usually register trademarks because they plan on doing something with them (or to make sure others don't do something with them). For all we know, SE might have totally planned on doing a third title. Do you know how many games go halfway into development before they get canceled, without them working on it ever even getting announced to the public? It's A LOT.
Maybe they worked on it and realized it would be a flop. Maybe they just didn't want a competitor to make a cheap clone with the name. We'll never know. I'm just saying that registering a trademark very often does mean a game is being developed, just not that it actually gets released.

In the case of Stormblood, well. It could be just about anything, but the timing fits (just before Fanfest), the theme fits with the spoiler poem, and it also fits with the notion that in 2.0 Yoshi said they want a sky or sea expansion but will go for sky first because airships and all that are such a big part of the FF universe (so the second expansion being the sea themed one would make sense). But yeah, it's ofc just speculation^^
Then again, such speculation often turns out to be true, so...I'll just stay hyped for now
