DPS is flat out stupid. Bring back DD

Something snapped in me just now. I think it was in the thread about samurai, red mage and healer where I read someone posting what their preferred roles should be and they said, "DPS, DPS, DPS". And you know, I'm sick of that term. If you spell it out, Damage Per Second, THAT is what you call your role?

Paladin, Dark Knight, Warrior: We hold aggro and protect the group! We're tanks!
White Mage, Scholar, Astrologist: We heal the party, cleanse debuffs and provide mitigation! We're healers!
The rest: We deal out high doses of damage and provide support to the party! We're damage per seconds! *group mumbles among each other* Umm, damage per seconders? *group mumbles more* Secondings? We don't fucking know.

It's time to get rid of Damage Per Second and bring back Damage Dealer! You don't call a tank a Mitigation Per Second or a Healer a Heal Per Second! It never made sense then, and doesn't make sense now!

I agree , it always been DD for me.
It seems the term DPS has been accepted as a description of ones job , rather than a measure of ones performance .

And the thing is, people parse tanks' and healers' DPS as well. "Great, my role is a unit of measure."

Teacher: Hey Timmy! That's a nice ruler you got there!
Timmy: Oh teacher, this isn't a ruler! It's an inches per second!

DD was definitely a new transition for many who went from that original term to the modern "DPS". With the rise of WoW in particular, the term "DPS" was fairly fitting. I mean, in that game for a very long time, DPS was pretty much a... DPS role thing. The game didn't build itself around the idea of healers doing damage (most of the time), nor did it focus on how much damage tanks did. Despite that though, some folks did question why "DPS" was a thing even there lol.

This game is the exception to the term in how ALL roles are essentially factored in by the players to be important. In light of all of this, it's gonna be almost impossible to get away from calling the DPS role "DPS". The acronym has an identity separate from the actual meaning, though they are related.

Even if the game and people would suddenly start refering to them as "DD" , i will still be calling them DPS.

This has always weirded me out.
I was used to calling them DDs, but as I spent more time on this forum, everyone else was using DPS so I kinda followed suit and assumed that's just how the English community calls it.
Because in the German subforum, we still mainly use DD.

And I hate using the term DPS, because especially for someone like me who does not have a 100% grasp on the English language, it's sometimes really hard to find a way to make it obvious if I'm talking about the actual damage per second or the damage per second..ers. Now I tend to use "DPS player" to make it more obvious, but like, it's such a waste of time to type out 10 letters instead of 2...x-X°
But I'm worried people won't know what I'm talking about if I use DD instead

Welcome to the realm of descriptive linguistics. Where stupid stuff is official if people use it. The designation DPS might not make sense, but it is the integral part of the holy trinity now.
