All I can say to this is... that if you go play ice hockey (I am from Finland, we play Ice Hockey!) you need to wear skates (and bring a stick) or you will end up being on your arse the whole match. If you just want to go fool around on the ice, go do it on your own time and stop wasting the time of people who bothered to bring the skates and wanted to play ice hockey.

Yeah and if you want to drive on the raceway you better bring your race car or expect to not be driving!

I get your point, I don't disagree. I use level 35 NM gear from 29 - 50, last night leveling CON before I hit 50... 3 strength rings, spirit bind gear, no gloves, and boots. Sad part is I was only healing about 50-80 points less than a 'fully' decked out CON of the same level (no materia).

My iceskates might be 10 years old and rusty, but they got the job done

Unfotunately I think it true that DoM can get away with substandard gear and really go unnoticed outside of Dungeons and NM's.
