Exactly what everyone supporting the decay system back in the day did. Why this should be any diferent now? Delete level 10 or lower unaccessed characters in 6 months. That's not only very unfair given you're talking about deleting data, but it's irreversable. There is no way back, no compensation when a player retuens to a deleted character. Actually, your opinion is downright draconian, and all because someone cant be bothered to change up the spelling of their name for uniqueness? Yeah, trample on others for your own good why dont you.
Because removing a home (limited in-game resource) does not delete the character, inconvenient and annoying as it is, the player's character still exists.
Deleting characters to free up names is not required because names are an unlimited resource and it results in the deletion of a player's character - the character will no longer exist.
Since it is as simple as can be to add an extra vowel, an extra consonant, an apostrophe, or whatever else to make a name the same but unique, there is absolutely no need to remove existing characters for the vain convenience of others.
Honestly, this discussion is tired, rather than calling for the deletion of another player's character, people might be better to spend the same time coming up with a name that satisfies their need, and is available.

There is an argument to be made that beyond just the availability of names, the server can become overpopulated with alts and characters under level 10 like Alexander_Dragonfang is describing, which causes the players to be unable to start a character on the same server as their friend's. If a level 10 character no longer exists, you're talking about an hour of game time and trying to say that character is precious to the player. I'm just calling into question how valuable that character could be to a player who plays it for an hour and then leaves the game for half a year.Because removing a home (limited in-game resource) does not delete the character, inconvenient and annoying as it is, the player's character still exists.

Personally i couldn`t care less about nicknamre reservations, im exactly the opposite of an alt-holic, if there is anything i consider the greatest design choice of this game, is being able to have it all in one character.
What i do care about tho, is server limitations and storage usage. Unplayed characters use probably more server space than a fully equipped house. Get rid of them, level 5 or lowers.
Not sure if this has been mentioned but the art of 'name freeing' is common place in MMOS; GW2, Wildstar, WoW; they have all done this before. The character itself doesn't have to be deleted, all SE would need to do is remove the line of script dictating the name you chose.
When you log in all the game would do is request you create a new name for your character, that still exists on your account. I would agree, however, that any characters with their names being removed should have been in-active for at least 2 years (in my eyes.) Level shouldn't *really* matter.

Delete them. They shan't be missed.

No. So just cause you were to slow to take the name now it's time to casual cry to SE to remove those characters so you can steal the name? More self entitlement at its finest. And I'm referring to lvl1 characters that only made it as far as the opening cutscene only to NEVER log in again. I'm finding this more common on alts, as opposed to people who've played on trial (I'd assume playing on trial will get you well beyond level 1.) and subbed as a result; that's how I ended up playing XIV.
I'm aware character removal in general is a touchy subject, probably having been implemented in other MMOs, but the way I see it, it's a level one character, fresh to the game, that say, hasn't been accessed in months to a year, maybe even more. Why bother? It can free up potential names and space (although I can't say how much space a character with no sufficient levels even takes up.)
What do you guys think?

you know you can just edit your post right? That bypasses the character limit too. Also, isn't it more entitled to say that you can steal a name with a lv1 alt and then never play it? As Lokier has said, this is nothing new, and will eventually be implemented regardless of whether or not people complain. Though it's not like they would delete the character, it would just have to be renamed after it was flagged for being inactive for too long (I mean we're talking a year here). Hell, if it was an original name then you really shouldn't have a problem with it since no one would think to take it.
