Aside from Lalafell and Roegadyn and female Elezen, most of them look way to similiar to each other.
1. Male Au Ra and Elezen look alike.
2. Female Hyur, Au Ra and Miqote are almost clones of each other.
I can understand why people (especially those that play female avatar) want to have different race that does not look like the current ones. The Viera only shares one thing with female Elezen, they are tall. Personaly, I want a full beastman type of race like the Charr from Guild Wars 2.
Yoshida did not want to add the Viera, because its a race with animal ears, yet for some bizarre reason he thought adding a clone of a female Hyur or Miqote with horns and scales is very different...
Becuase more options to make your avatar feel like your own is in no way a bad thing.
Plus, isn't it pretty standard practice in modern MMOs to add new a race per expansion? I was under the impression FFXI never doing so was an oddity.
Pretty lizard people were their original idea. Au Ra isn't a rehash of an old FF race. It also fit with the dragon themed story of HW to have dragonlike people. They decided became less dragonlike as the designs were developed, however.
And, good gracious, Au Ra men are everywhere!
From the art shown at last round of fanfests, a werewolf race was tossed around, too.
So can't they just expand on the options we have now? I'd rather see that than just "tall Elezen with bunny ears".
And yeah, while Au Ra are nice I think I would've liked the more bestial look they had in pre production, but alas...............

Clearly, the best Final Fantasy character is Locke Cole.
Glamour is TRUE ENDGAME
Just the females have the possibility of looking like a clone of Miqo'te and Hyurs. The males are somewhat sort of unique (dem birthing hips). In that old poll back in 2012 where "Viera" were the most wanted, Yoshi-P noted that "cute" is apparently very popular and would look into it. Cute petite waifish monster girl is the end result and I can only imagine/fear this will be the norm for any future playable race (while the non-playable races will be more interesting).
Well...I could name a few things.
Such as that Roegadyn are being muscular Hyurs with bad skin condition, Hyurs being Hyurs, Highlanders being muscular Hyurs, Miqo'te and Au Ra being cosplaying Hyurs and Lalafell being Hyur babbies with odd ears (visually).
I'd consider a unique race a more than welcome addition. I just realize that's unlikely to happen and we're more likely to just get 25 more flavors of "cute" in the character editor >_>
22 expansions into things, looking at a 23rd later this year, and Everquest has only added Iksar, Vah Shir, Drakkin and Frogloks as playable races. They have also only ever added two classes (Beastlord and Berserker) and permitted a few additional race/class combinations not originally possible (Gnome Shadow Knight, Gnome Paladin, Halfling Paladin, Halfling Ranger to name a few).
Adding new races or new classes/jobs with each expansion is not the standard practice. It takes an awful lot of work to fit new classes/jobs into the existing power structure without getting the balance of power too far out of whack. It is much easier to permit old races to take on new jobs, because that does not affect the balance of power between the various jobs. FF14 already allows every race to be every job as it is, so they cannot even permit new race/job combinations without introducing a new race or new job.

I've been hoping for Vieras, myself! I love them and I'm especially curious about the males. Getting new races is always exciting, as they come with new possibilities for character creation (and emotes). I certainly will never say no to more diversity, haha.
However, I'd be fine if they ended up releasing any other race that I personally don't like (if a new race is released at all).
