And have to get it quite a bit further than 19. To meld onto a piece of gear you need the class that makes that type of gear up to the level of that gear. For level 48 metal armor, that's a level 48 armorer.
There are materia melders in the main cities now. They look like large blue materia on the map. You can find the npc fairly easily near Hawkers Alley in Limsa Lominsa. This should bypass your crafter requirements. :]Thanks for all the reply's, I was kinda hoping after getting up to lvl 19 on BSM I could infuse materia onto my lvl48 dragoons armor, but I have to get into the armory job too, I hope it's worth the effort. Love the game but they could of made this part of it simpler.

I found it, my Dragoon now has materia on his armor. Would be good to do it myself but to become a high level armor maker would take months. Thanks for all the advice.

Glad you found what you needed. Though, just for the record, it wouldnt take that long to level a crafter. Doing the leveling strictly with daily army turn ins and bird quests can get you between 1/2 and 3 levels a day, and you can speed up that rate with leves and general crafting too. So if you are interested and just think that the time commitment will be too long, dont be afraid to keep trying. You might be ready to meld and repair your own sets in just a few short levels.
Ixal beast tribes give pretty quick crafting XP, especially once you gain a few reputation tiers so you can pick up a dozen of the quests a day.

It has been a long time since I did the starting quests so if this has already been covered by them then sry but: The advantage to having a crafter high enough to meld is the ability to do "forbidden" or "over" melds. Crafted (non blue) armor or weapons can hold up to five materia (penta-meld) on it regardless of how many slots it has. Only crafters can add materia on to armor beyond its slot capabilities however, and each extra meld has an increasing chance of failing and destroying the materia. You can always just pay a crafter to do forbidden melds for you, but because they can already be expensive in material costs and time consuming if you are having bad luck, I like to do my own (or my friends). Penta melds aren't really useful or necessary until late endgame, so don't worry about them right now. As Frizze said leveling crafting through the Ixal dailies in the North Shroud is very fast. You can also do the daily turn ins of your GC (under timers) or leves (HQ items give more exp). What is nice about the dailes is that you don't need to buy your own materials. In Heavensward there is another set of beast tribe quests to get crafters from 50-60. If you do start leveling crafters I'd recommend taking all of the crafts to 15 before taking one to 50 so that you can get a good selection of cross class skills that will make crafting at higher levels easier.
Also if you like to have melds I'd recommend leveling up your reputation with the other ARR beast tribes (The Slyphs, Sahagin, Kolbolds and the Amal'jaa). At max rank these quests will let you choose one out of a selection of tier IV materia as reward for each daily completed. You can get a total of 12 materia a day from all four tribes.

The other advantage to leveling crafting besides being able to meld and the obvious creating of items is the ability to repair gear. The requirement for that is ten levels below the level of the gear. So as mentioned above, a level 48 ARM could meld onto level 48 armor, but a level 38 ARM could repair that same armor.

Thanks again for all the advice, never even thought about doing crafting leves . I've only ever done the battle ones. This game is so massive and diverse, I would be totally lost without this forum. Honestly I have never been on any gaming site before where people try and help each other the way you guys do here. So thanks (again)

Always happy to help, and come back with any other questions you have. I cant speak for any other gaming sites, but i certainly know why i help people. 1: it feels good to share what little knowledge i have. Much more importantly, 2: it strengthens the game. A bad community is annoying, a player who cant figure things out and doesnt get help becomes frustrated, frustrated players are more likely to quit, people quitting hurts the game. A friendly community is welcoming, people get the help they need to (hopefully) have fun, they enjoy the game and keep playing possibly even recommending to their friends, the game is stronger and the devs might even have more resources to make it better, everyone benefits.
