Well, they gonna help them with cross server party finder.
With that (and to be able to raid with that) ppl can switch to lower pop servers if they want because of housing, hunts, whatever..
There are few in-game indicators that show how many players are in a server, and the most populated ones aren't readily visible, so new players with no outside connections with other people will more than likely just pick a random.
That, and there are probably many other reasons I'm personally not aware of.
I know this is not the best solution but they could well merge those small servers and make it one and call it another name to keep all happy.
Housing problem ? I dont see it as a problem since they are small it means those small servers have lots and lots of free slots that could be filled by merging. It will probably happen at one point but yeah at least it could answer some of the problems that Goblin, Mateus Zalera and maybe others have.
Not ideal again but maybe the only solution, or better said, better this solution then closing the server due to ...low population right ?

I personally don't like the feeling of a crowded server, seeing hoards of people wherever you go, no place to have your own space. I work with people all day so when I game the last thing I want is crowds.
I was in Balmung a long time and there are plenty of places in there where you never see anybody whatesoever. So just because there are zillions of people in a server doenst mean you will be seeing people constantly, that is not true at all.
Just me though
The only problem with that is that even though we have a lot of free spots, the majority are still filled regardless making that kind of method not too plausible since people who owned a house on both servers with the same plot will have troubles. They're not gonna close the server though that's one thing. Even Mateus has an active server it's just not bustling to the point where things such as replacements for raids are readily available, or PFs constantly up.

Housing honestly...I don't think would be an issue if you merged servers. For me...I had 3 houses on famfrit now I have 1 still and I'm not even on there anymore so...yeah. In addition there's one guy who has half of a ward all his Alt FC houses too. Also not all servers are great. I'd dissuade anyone from going to famfrit unless you like not actually doing any content and like people that aren't helpful at all.

For some of us that started at 2.0 launch (also those of us who pre ordered to get the 3 days early access) we could only get into a few servers because of the amount of traffic straining the servers. Also the legacy servers such as Balmung were locked to EVERYONE that didn't play 1.XX. As such, it became a "whatever is open". And I say this as a guy who played a bit of 1.XX and have a legacy character on Balmung (I'm on Coeurl cause my friends and brother couldn't get on Balmung, so my original guy is still there due to transfers being implemented months down the line).
Fast forward to now, people can pay to transfer to legacy servers and there was a mass migration of players from smaller servers wanting to go to bigger ones. So smaller got smaller and bigger got bigger. Not the ideal situation for the already small servers.
