Anyone I know for a fact is doing a kickass job during a run or someone who I felt I had a "silent camaraderie" with.

Thinking about it, I normally give it to a DPS first mainly cause people shit on DPS alot of the times. Tanks and healers are often praised just for being there, you NEVER hear people praise a DPS for being there.. it's " expected" So I give it to them. And if not that, then it goes to the person who actually says something in the dungeon and is nice. But yeah, DPS all the way, cause we have to wait FOREVER to get in ques, We have to put up with shitty tanks who don't think about placement when we're tying to do damage. We're the first ones to get kicked if we don't like something making us wait LONGER in que and pretty much noone pays attention to DPS. This is just something I noticed in mmos and it's kindof sad honestly.

    Admittedly, I am most likely to comm people who are chatty and make the run enjoyable. If you can't be bothered to even say hello, I usually share that sentiment when giving out comms. For specifics, healers who have to deal with mistake-- my own included -- get special attention. They're working hard. I also have a soft spot for Bards who keep giving me TP Regen. You people are so wonderful. ;-;

On the flipside, I've noticed I get a ton of comms for using Doom Spike and a proper AoE rotation. Have to wonder if it's so rare Dragoons do that in dungeons that my groups are legit surprised? I dunno.

Sadly it's come to the point where anyone who can manage at least the above criteria will get my commendation, but I am not really impressed by a Bard using Foe's or whatever for example because that's the most basic of gameplay and I don't think they deserve a pat on the back for it. Skill matters very little to me. I'll always commend the person who spoke or who was humble in complete failure above the mute who performed well. If you're a Healer who failed hard and nearly caused a wipe in Mhach but apologised sincerely while the Tank clutched the raid from a wipe, you're still getting my commendation over the Tank.
But on the other hand, if I were that tank, I would probably slowly quit doing my job if I began to feel like my ability to play my job goes ignored and unappreciated because having skill is no longer a factor in getting a commendation.

Basically what I'm getting at is, when people are giving out commendations just for saying something as simple as hello, and nothing more. All incentive for me to want to try my hardest goes out the window because I could Heavy Shot my way through a dungeon without using any other skill at all; and still get commendations all because I said hello. See where I'm getting at here? Not trying to sound rude, just being brutally honest. Some of us do want the commendation rewards, and if being good at your job is no longer a requirement to getting it, than, why bother? Your commendation is basically teaching me that it's okay to be bad as long as I'm friendly and talk.

    Netflix and chill mode engage!

See, this I don't agree with. Based on your scenario, that tank pulled out victory from the jaws of defeat. They went above their basic rotation; maybe popped a perfectly timed Hallowed Ground or worked LB3 into their cooldown rotation to save the group from a wipe. Not giving them a comm because the healer apologized for mistakes feels cheap to me-- like you're giving them a participation award. I'll still be nice to said healer and tell them not to worry about it if it were an honest mistake, but I have to give the tank the comm because they did their job well and I like encouraging that.

This is a much nicer and probably more accurate way of putting what I was trying to say.

I give it to brd's that play foe, when I am on smn/blm. Out of 1000 bards I find maybe one, that plays foe and if it's just for 5 seconds, I'll give them the commendation. If we have no bard in the group I mostly don't bother unless I see extreme effort from the other dps or tank/heals.

I adopted FFXIV's approach and base my decision on RNG... I close my eyes and push up and down on the D- pad multiple times while I sing the RNG song and where ever the curser lands when the song is over gets the vote.

Were numbers invented or discovered? How many Moogles does it take to make Kuponut rum? Answer: zero... They will give you a quest to make it.

Whether I am running as healer or DPS, I try to give everyone an equal opportunity to earn a commendation. However as healer, it easier for me to evaluate everyone's performances since the amount I heal is a direct result of that. If I could design a points system and implement it to keep track of player performances, it would work something like this:

    Awarded
    -----------
Says hello/goodbye before and after instance: +1
At any point, takes time to explain mechanics: +1
    Performs their duty adequately: +1
Does not take unnecessary damage: +1
Goes above and beyond the bare minimum: +2
Polite and courteous to other players: +2
Saves an instance that would have otherwise failed: +3

    Deductions
    -------------
Does not greet, or say farewell/thanks after clear: -1
Ignores mechanics or does not care to learn them: -1
Cannot perform the bare minimum: -1
    Shows up unprepared: -1
Deliberately makes things harder for others, and inefficient: -2
Rude, belligerent behaviour towards others: -2
Causes wipe and does not care: -3 (-1 otherwise)

That's about the best I can come up with. If there is a tie, then no one gets a commendation. Have to be fair, yeah?

As a tank, I usually commend the healer (especially when they heal me through a big pull or a bad pull by mistake)

As a dps, I usually commend the tank for keeping the aggro (I'm a blm)

As a healer, I usually commend the tank or the dps, depending on the situation (deaths, survivability, etc)

Can be exception, but this is my general mindset.

Also, words and chats or greetings doesn't automatically make commend-worthy: I learned that just because they say hi, it doesn't automatically mean they're nice. That's experience from life itself.
