    Naoki Yoshida interview @Gamescom

Finaland & Eorzea Times had the opportunity to talk with Yoshida-san at Gamescom last month. It's talking about the future of the game and also some features that are actually in the game or from Korean & Chinese servers (you know what I mean).

    Enjoy !

"I totally understand, so with 4.X series we would like to give you some really new contents and challenges, this is something that we would like you to look forward to it."

I wonder...I hope he doesn't just mean another tomestone + water currents (they are totally different from air currents!)

He is objecting against content "that is not FFXIV" so much that I think his perspective of "really new content" is...warped at best. Also, just remembering recent additions that failed to deliver to the promises made (Diadem/PotD) leads me to being more cautious than optimistic.

    Diadem was bad.

Palace of the dead lets people preview jobs and trains the community as a whole to be better players. It's random music and mechanics make it pretty fun compared to running a dungeon again. There's a lot of cool stuff with the items. You can clear it with 1 2 3 or 4 people and with any kind of make up. 4 healers, 4 tanks, 4 dps or any mixture. The rewards are very rewarding too.

    What's not to like?

Once hit an explosive trap right by a silver chest that was explosive as well. All 4 of us died in a split second. It was a wtf moment then but makes me grin thinking of it now.

Had a time we got wiped out by some palace owls those things that cast chirp, and the ahriman that petrify you. It felt like we pulled 2 or 3 mobs and then someone hit a monster trap. We all died quickly from sleep and petrify and our faces getting bashed in.

Could have really used a Pomander of Witching!! >__<

I don't know but tons of people doing POTD in my FC and i see weapons everywhere. To call POTD a failure is a bit much. Diadem was popular until the nerf and changes are coming so we'll have to see.

I can't think of any other MMO that I've played, where you can accurately predict almost everything that is going to be added in a content patch months or even years before the patch is even implemented. This is because of the pattern that FFXIV follows and that pattern is what people are getting tired of. Failing to understand that and failing to add new content that breaks the mold is what will cause the game to be crushed in the end.

More than anything, the pace of vertical progression is what diminishes the value of the content cycle. The feeling is basically "why should I put in so much effort to get this gear, when I'm just going to replace it in 3 months ?" and that feeling eventually will lead to "Why am I even playing this game ?" For some the answer is glamours and RP, and for others it is the competition that exists in the raid or PVP scene. This is why servers like balmung and gilgamesh are so full because that is where those communities are the most prevalent. People have gravitated towards those servers because people more and more are realizing that without a strong community, this game has very little substance.

People have been tired of the same content formula for a very long time. It is simply the game's community that is holding the game together. Frankly that has been the case since 1.0. Without the community this game would have never made it to ARR. This is a testament to the fact that people will continue to play and pay for this game no matter how bad it is. Yoshida I'm sure is keenly aware of that fact.

I don't think people should be expecting the game to change much at all from what it currently is.

You forgot the fun story with Edda and the retro interface. Seriously PotD is the best thing ever.

Wow Zetsumei WOW. I'm going to be brief and polite as possible.

What would you do differently or what do you want from ffxiv?

FFXIV has continued to expand on way more than just Ilvl gear and the next dungeon or raid. While there's a formula and timeline on how things are released it's things like fenrir and adamantoise being able to now fly that go a long way. Seriously what MMO isn't constantly replacing gear with better gear? I think this game does a great job in the even patches and odd patches system. Gear and even crafted items or 2.0 pvp gear or relics were hard to get at first, but made more accessable later. It's a good system.

Anyways I just don't agree with what your saying with
"where you can accurately predict almost everything that is going to be added in a content patch months or even years before the patch is even implemented"
and finally "I don't think people should be expecting the game to change much at all from what it currently is. "

I mean look at how the game has changed from 2.0 to 3.3
Crafting and gathering was deeply expanded upon. There's way more depth and progression to gathering and crafting than before.
Pvp, quality of life, gold saucer, mentors, holidays, animations and emotes, beast tribe revisions which leads me to mention the complete change to how materia is handled. Treasure maps and the Aquapolis, Orchestrian stuff and housing. There hasn't always been big fishing or notorious monsters or hunts.

It's the little things that go a long way too. I feel like every aspect of the game is always considered to be improved upon. Like waymarks and them showing up on the mini map. Fates showing the % complete. Clicking on a npc or mining node auto dismounts you. THE ABILITY TO TELEPORT WHILE MOUNTED. These things make me feel like everything is cared about and the devs are trying to make the best possible game.

FFXIV is the only MMORPG I know that always adds different kinds of contents for different kinds of players, one that's constantly adding new ideas into the plate (like Diadem, Palace of the Death, flying system, screenshot mode, mini games in Gold saucer, Aquapolis, etc etc). Yet all I see is a bunch of people complaining about every single thing. I guess it must be a typical disease from every official forum.

No MMORPG can satisfy everyone. Games can only do so much for people who aren't very good at having fun on their own, without the devs taking their hand for every single day of their lives. I personally have a lot of fun in this game. I'm not "tired" of the content formula. In fact, I love it because it's very friendly and rewarding; it helps casual players progress, and it gives hardcore raiders achievements to brag about for half a year. I'd never stick to a game that's bad, thank you very much.
