Apparently, new player means no one can look anything up anymore

So... basically this text box that pops up when you enable mentor status is lying. Maybe the GM's have to start removing people's mentor status before they actually care.

Indeed, if you explicitly set expectations regarding conduct linked to mentor status and people don't meet those expectations, then they really should no longer retain the status conferred on them. If this is not at least partially enforced, it demeans the entire system.

Maybe I just lack faith in people sometimes... I feel this game has to legitimately spoonfeed a certain chunk of it's playerbase to even absorb the simplest of instructions and tasks. Maybe then, DF wouldn't be so terrible.

There is no "playstyle" argument. There is a right way and a wrong way to do things.

You're forgetting all the discussions of MSQ questlines and filler quests where people (seemingly) are proud that they ignore all the text in quests and skip through. Apparently the game spoon feeds us, but many ignore the spoons.
