Some people just -really- do not know better. Ignorance to the max. I had met a level 41ish WHM who was just doing FATEs because for some reason they couldn't continue with their MSQs. This newbie sprout had mentioned while I was FATE spamming in Northern Thanalan. Took a look at her gear, it was really fucking bad. I told her about gearing and how it was very important, especially the main hand. I have no idea how she did after that but she was receptive. I honestly am not sure how everyone is talking about how you can actually get good HQ gear because when I did the 2.0 MSQ I was always asking my friends for help gear wise.

How do you even know if the player even knows that the grand company quartermaster sells him gear? We -assume- they know these things based on our own knowledge but it's really easy to be ignorant to what is going on in the game to help a player. Is that right? Is that fair to the people having to play? No. But just leaving them because we've deemed them garbage without question is ridiculous.

If we actually knew what words were spoken we'd know just how toxic someone is. Toxicity isn't from being bad. Toxicity is being bad and being told how to fix it and blowing it off. Toxicity is seeing someone bad and not caring to see if someone just doesn't know better.

Came HW, I think that gear was added to several main quests so that you always had access to appropriate gear. (Confirmation needed)

Because the game tells you. If someone skips dialogue in a Final Fantasy game, he's to blame

It's the same for basic RPG knowledge like gearing, talking to NPC... especially those with blatant yellow excalmations points over their head, and even moreso if their's a "+" sign added to it.

Of course leaving them is a bad idea, but if they think that "First run" is a valid excuse for failing at everything not tied to the actual dungeon, yet it's clear they're not even trying.

Like I said, he's not right for being ignorant and playing poorly. It's not a valid excuse no but if they actually listen and learn when told instead of just being berated off the bat? We won't know because of this one post and from how biased it is. Yes the player sucked but I honestly sucked at dodging Ifrit and Titan's plumes in Hard Mode for about a week before I got better. His 'new' excuse is valid for Chimera deaths (not helped by the gear issues) and I don't know if those other 8 deaths to bosses were in the 2nd boss. Did he know to stay out of the middle? Did he know he could lessen or avoid the damage by staying away from the wurm's underground charge? Or did he think it was unavoidable?

As you said, "it's basic RPG knowledge" but if this is their first MMO? Their first RPG? It's their fault for not reading yes, but that just means they might need a little more help than others. I remember I was 13 and playing Breath of Fire and I screwed up the basics by not speaking to ONE NPC of all NPCs in a town. He had never been a part of the "linear" line and I wanted to get a move on. Shame on me because I went to check online what I had done wrong and it was the ONE NPC I didn't speak to. It happens.

Re:Gear, as far as I know the gear added was to the 45 and 50 quests (AF and AF+1/Myth) and other lvl 50 gear but it's at the end of the 2.0 ARR questline onwards. HW added the HQ gear. Otherwise before hand most of that gear is pretty honestly crap so if he was wearing dungeon gear he might have been under the erroneous assumption that his gear was still much better even with the level difference.

Even the MSQ dungeons in HW are still meh in terms of iLVL requirements. I had a MCH with a plain Ironworks gun, ironworks left side with Chest+Pants Augmented, 2 DEX i130 accessories BUT STILL USE 2 i39 Accessories and 1 i38 accessory.

And he knew better because when he was happy about being 60 and being able to use the i240 torrent gun and I'd asked him if he could replace his accessories, he said no and that he could craft i220 ones 'soon'. Showing off a Caster and a Healer Midan accessory did not change how I felt about it.
