Completely new player looking for some help

So I decided to give the game a try since I've been a fan of the series since the day it came out (yeah I'm an old fart ). I like it so far, but feel that I don't have a good grasp on it at all. I've been reading forums and going through website tutorials to try to get up to snuff.

I started a CNJ out on Leviathan. I've been doing quests and fates which seems to be going well. I'm not really sure if this world is a good place to start or if I should start a character on another that may be more friendly to a beginner. I've noticed chat doesn't seem to have much going on, so I'm a little lost there. I'd appreciate any thoughts, help, etc. from anyone who would be kind enough to push me along Thanks!

I would suggest shouting for a Free Company (FC) or Linkshell (LS). Those should help you start socializing and hopefully you'll find a person who wants to give you a better understanding of whatever you have questions about.

Other than that seems like you are doing the things the early levels encompass so just keep on trucking!

Welcome to Eorzea fellow old fart.
As you are CNJ (Healer class), levelling will be easy because your dungeon queue times are fast.
Tank and Healer classes have fast queue times, melee DPS is slow, range DPS is abysmally slow.
Dungeon XP is faster than open world XP. Save those side Quest for aiding in levelling of DPS classes.
While on your Healer, just concentrate on Main Story Quest (MSQ) line, those quest with sun burst design.

Pretty much all servers have a good number of decent Free Companies (FC) which are willing help out new players.
The smaller servers have more new players like yourself, a lot more RMT spammers and weaker pool of end game raiders.
The large servers are hard to create new characters on as they are frequently closed, your best times to add characters on the large servers are between 4-6am US Eastern time.
If you like end game raiding, then you really should move to a larger server.
Another option, which does cost money, is continue to play on Levi, decided if you like the game, then you can world transfer from the small server the big servers.

Welcome to Eorzea! We hope your stay is violent and victorious. Or crafty. Or whatever else you end up liking. I cant speak for Leviathan specifically, but most of the servers have a helpful Novice Network. Look for someone with a crown next to their name and you can ask for an invite. Soja's advice of finding an FC and/or LS to join can also be immensely helpful. If you have specific questions, the forums(and this one in particular) can be very helpful so dont hesitate to ask.

Bonus advice: While doing quests, its important to keep up with the quests that take you through the main storyline of the game. These have the flaming meteor icon surrounding the quest exclamation point, for example... this one you probly did shortly after starting. Do those quests, as theyll take you all over the world and open up many new avenues of adventure.

Server chat isn't a good indication of server population since the game is pretty quiet outside of the endgame hub (Idllyshire atm). As other have said, most people socialize through Linkshells (invite only chat channels) or their Free Company. You can have eight LSes at one time but only one FC (guild). For new players a good way to start out is the Novice Network, which is limited strictly to new player sprouts and mentors. For an invite just send a /tell to anyone with a crown/mentor icon over their head. There are a couple different mentor types such as battle, crafting, gathering and general mentor which all have different icons, but any of them can give you an invite.

Thank you for the replies everyone! I've been chugging along on my main questline just fine, so I will take you suggestions and try to get myself into some LS's and hopefully a FC. I'll have to keep an eye out for a mentor as well. I figure with a couple weeks to try it out, that will give me a good idea of what I want to do, but I'm liking it so far, so at this point I plan on buying in lol. Again, thanks so much
