Buying character slots?

Hello! First of all, I must confess: I'm an alt-aholic. FFXIV offers a lot of diversity, and I just love playing with all the different races. Furthermore, it is possible that any new race will be released in the future, which means that people like me will want to make new characters without sacrificing their actual ones.

If I remember well, we can have up to 40 characters per account, however, we can only have 8 per server. I've already used my 8 slots, so for my next character I'll be forced to start anew in a completely different server without my friends.

In this situation, I'm wondering if it would be possible to surpass the 8 characters limit by buying extra character slots. Let's consider that, even if I had 40 alts in a single server, I could only play 1 character at a time, so I (perhaps in my ignorance) don't have the impression that this would result in a negative impact for the servers themselves. Please correct me if I'm wrong though!

I am exactly the same ;;;; I adore creating characters despite the extra trouble it can mean with having to run through the MSQ all over for instance, but for me, that trouble is easily worth the reward. I love chasing different aesthetics and getting excited when I see specific, new armours that might suit X or Y character, it can simply make any patch all the more exciting when you know it's going to have something for at least one of your characters. Currently, I am also locked behind the 8-character restriction per server. And don't get me wrong, I feel SE have been very generous with allowing you to create up to 40 in total and 8 per server, but the truth is that those extra 32 slots are near-useless to me. I am comfortable and happy playing on a high-population server and any other one I have visited to test character designs(due to creation locks) just feel like ghost towns, and that's IGNORING the fact that you're leaving all of your friends and affiliates behind.

Ideally, I'd love them to allow more of the 40 characters to be accessible on a single server. If it were free then I'd be overjoyed, but if it was a matter of paying a fee akin to enhancing your account with retainer services then I would accept it, for it would be much better than nothing.

As it stands, I am almost hoping that I do not like the new race simply for the fact that it would mean playing elsewhere but I feel that this is an issue that could be very low-impact and still make a lot of people happy. Please consider this, SE! ;_:

I feel like it's unnecessary.
8 Character slots per server is a lot already and we already got enough additional services and stuff on the mog station.
What do you people even do with that many characters?

"Unnecessary" isn't really a good argument against this. Do you actually think this would be detrimental in some way?

I never said it'd be detrimental, I do think its unnecessary cause the time is spent better on another part of the game however.
Like I said back there, 8 characters is already a lot. If people really need more than 8 characters, then just like other people stated, why not explore the other servers?
You'd save money and SE'd save development time so we can actually get content everyone wants, win win situation?

Yes, you didn't say it's detrimental, which is why I asked if you thought it was instead of saying you thought it was. The point is that's the only valid argument against this, the only reason to disagree, if you think this would cause problems.

And honestly, I'd probably not use this myself. The only detrimental thing that could happen from this is economy balance from being able to get 9+ mhachi matter a week. I stopped at 4 characters though and don't know anyone with higher that'd fulfill the requirements for that so I doubt it'd get abused.

But when you come into a thread and want to debunk it, you should use a good argument for that. And "unnecessary" just doesn't fit that here, nor does "waste of development time" for something like this since (unless it's coded really poorly) the 8 character limit is just a spot in the code where it puts 8 slots there and could be changed to 9+.

I'm not against the idea, but something that seems really simple like this can actually cause a lot of development time depending on how things are coded - and it's likely a universal code that states the allowed number of characters based on your subscription type, and having any changes to that at all, especially on a case by case basis could really break their code, plus, adding more characters per server, they'd need to adjust the character log in page display and be able to add another row of characters or a page feature to display all the characters, so it would require time.

That said, if they DO implement such a feature, the ideal would be simply doubling the allowed characters per server to 16 with a new subscription type instead of just adding a +1. Or maybe just add a max of what they can fit on the current character page, but I don't think much more can be fit on with smaller screen sizes.
