Currency caps are really nothing effectively different from raid lockouts or respawn timers for world bosses - they all serve only to throttle the amount of gear you can attain in a given time period. This and RNG are pretty much the cornerstones of MMO gearing, I have a hard time believing the idea didn't pop up before WoW.
