I'd say: Totally dependend on the GM and the players. I had powercreep sessions and more rp focussed session playing D&D. Limits are your fantasy and tbh the quote isn't thaaat true... we had also runs with evil characters, where it was in-game that everyone wanted to become the strongest/mightiest/richest player in our group and to learn to work together for our own advantages and not for the entire parties benefit.

And tbh... DnD might be the worst example. XD
Just look how it "developed" from aD&D to D&D3.0/3.5 and D&D 4.0 (supporter, striker, healer, tank as roles.. lol, is this an MMORPG or what?).

And even without that D&D was always the Hack&Slay P&P RPG with the most standardized combat system and the most vertical character/gear progression with every class capable of fighting (and even a healer would always deal damage, at least with his quarter staff... unless there are good reasons rp wise).. compared with Vampire, Warhammer Fantasy, Cuthullu, Shadow Run, etc.

I was under the impression it was PnP games in general, but D&D is probably the most widely know, so was used as the example?
