The Rising Event! 1.0 Experience

Thanks for posting all of these screenshots and info, and thank you to the kind person who shared a playlist, I'm gonna watch that later!

Looking at the descriptions of the experience, I can't help but be reminded of FFXI, with Dynamis having mobs invading cities (although it was instanced and not in the actual cities proper) and Besieged actually had a section of a city be invaded by attacking monsters. Some of these attacks decimated players that showed up to fight, especially when the novelty had worn off and fewer numbers came to defend.

I would have played 1.0 up to the end had my bf been able to run it on his computer, so we decided to wait for the then promised PS3 version of 1.0 that never came. We played alpha, beta, I even picked up the collector's edition and played some time after release but my main character's screenshots are currently lost (on a missing hard drive) but she only got to 15 conjurer or so. We stopped playing when the fees were implemented, as we couldn't justify paying for FFXI and FFXIV, as we wouldn't be able to play both enough to make the fees worth it and especially when back in Vana'diel I could actually play alongside my bf.

I regret what I missed, especially given I now play FFXIV over FFXI, but I don't have a time machine, so I rely on posts like this to show me what it was like.

FFXIV End of the World Event

Ah, thanks for that Vil, when I logged into the game I never saw any combat taking place in Gridania and Limsa (and curiously I've never seen any screenshots showing such attacks taking place there either, it's only ever been footage of attacks on Ul'dah, again probably because 1.0 Ul'dah was basically the 'Jeuno' of FFXIV

), it was always just in Ul'dah I ever saw it happen. But thank you for clarifying that (and the links to those videos too).

Sadly I didn't take many screenshots in the final days of 1.0 (mostly because I am ashamed to admit I only really logged in in the last month or so when things went to hell in a handbasket, as I was too distracted levelling my character in FFXI beyond 75), but this one, from not the 'original' last day (before the Calamity), but the real last day (when the servers were reactivated briefly for a month and a bit only to be shut down for good on New Year's Eve 2012) - I can't help but tear up inside when I see this (listening to 1.0's Piece of Mind while viewing this pic is fitting background to it). Also notice the 'farewell and thank you' message from SE as well, I thought that was a sweet gesture:

Thank all you for sharing your photos from the end of v1.

After doing this year's Rising event, I also went back and looked through old photos and videos of that time. And how epic it was!

The world as we knew it was going to pieces. Aetheryte camps were no longer safe. People would teleport in and get slaughtered right away if Atmos happened to be around.

The cities were being attacked constantly. We were capped at level 50 with first generation Relic weapons, often gifted to us by the Twelve. But facing level 70 to 79 and higher monsters... well, it was messy. But we had to protect the cities!

And then frantically running around trying to find the locations with symbols of the Twelve and pray before them, while Imperial troops were invading all of Eorzea...

We knew it was hopeless, but we couldn't just give up.

Despite its flaws, I loved v1 dearly and will cherish those memories forever. It was truly "Once in a Lifetime".

That would be nice. There were more garlean invasion events before 1.23. It was just that they appeared the first time in the cities during 1.23

I'll chip in with some of my own end of the world screenshots.

One of the many city battles taking place in Ul'dah.

The Limsa area also had Imperials invading its shores. Had to show this one who had the better axe.

Of course sometimes you just want to go Black Mage and throw out a nice Flare.

Beautiful screen shots and video everyone. Thank you for contributing to this post. It's a great pleasure to be able to even view others screen shots. Keep them around guys.. We will be telling this story for many years.

Here's the Wandering Minstrel, from way back in the day. He saw through all me deeds back then and continues to regale people about them to this day.

Any event with him always brings me joy, since he knows me better than even myself some days.

I remember the day of the final save well. I logged out that night with my best gear on after saying my goodbyes to the world, not knowing what I'd awaken to.
