    Questions about crafting

The only mmo I've played is WoW and I have a few questions about how the crafting works in this game.

    1) Do we need to learn recipes before crafting or if we have the right mats in our inventory we can go ahead and make it. Say we know what the mats are from an external site or whatever.

    2) I'm thinking that mining goes for blacksmith, armorsmith, and goldsmith? Botanist is for alchemy and carpentry? Then I guess fishing is for culinarian?

3)Is there a site that tells you the best places to farm the mats for certain recipe? I know WoW had wowhead. Does FFXIV have a huge database like that?

Thank you for all your help. FFXIV community seems a lot more helpful than the WoW community ever was.

    1. You don't need the recipes, just select one of the 8 slots and go through your inventory selecting the items. Page up/down can speed this up, and select an item multiple times if the recipe requires more than one of that item. You can also access your most recently used recipes to speed things up.

    2. You're mostly right about mining. Botanists also gather fibers like moko grass, cotton bolls, and flax for weaving. Many items obtained through fishing can also be used by alchemists. Basically, many crafting classes use items from multiple gathering classes.

    3. Yes! disciplesoftheland.com provides locations and 'sweet spots' for every item that can be gathered. Keep in mind you can find most ingredients through vendors or the Ul'dah Market Wards.

Thank you for the quick response! I'm having a lot of fun started on Friday and got to rank 17 on lancer and tried some mining leves. I think I finally got a hang of the mining thing. Oh and one other question I was exploring south of Gridania and I came to a new zone with lvl 30 mobs and I saw this ?? beast named Sirocco. Is that somesort of world boss?

It's called NM (Notorious Monster) and yes it's kind of a mini boss. It's usually much higher level than other mobs in the same area. Like maybe +10.

NM usually can drop a lot of equipment (but drop rate might be low on some better equipment).

Also, if you want to check up-to-date recipe database, this one is pretty good. http://mooglebox.com

I found a lot of Alchemy as well as Culinary ingredients from Logging/Harvesting too. And yes one craft sometimes can use materials from all 3 gathering classes. You should still be able to plan your craft recipe for leveling up easily while focusing it on what Gathering you do and avoiding others that you don't do.

A few small notes. First off, a lot of recipes use a large variety of materials. So, don't think you'll NEVER use wood for blacksmithing (It's used for the handles of weapons and such), or leather for weaving... although, fishing is pretty much just for culinarian and alchemist.

Another thing about disciplines of land is that if you're looking to dye anything, which enhances stats and specializes it for certain disciplines, you'll likely need all three types. Each dye can only be gotten by either harvesting, quarrying, or spearfishing, and only in a specific region. So, spearfishing in Thanalan gives a different dye than spearfishing in La Noscea, which gives a different dye than quarrying in La Noscea. Make sense?

Another thing of note is that the Lodestone, FFXIV's official website, actually has most information available to you. All the revamped recipes (Which you should be using, as the recipes are generally easier to use, and for the most part make better equipment) are up on the lodestone (Go down to the Synthesis tab, and click "all recipes", then search). You do have to look at the market wards to get the stats of the equipment, however. Or just look online. The lodestone also has plenty of information on what NPCs sell what, and what you can expect to get doing DoL at a given camp. Head to the "Patch Notes" section of this forum, and go to the thread "Changes Planned for 1.19". Down at the bottom of the first page is all the discipline of land info, it really comes in handy. Well, it doesn't have fishing, unfortunately.

    ---

Also, on a side note, most disciplines of land were adjusted recently in patch 1.19. In patch 1.20 they plan on revamping the remaining two disciplines, the ones that don't make weapons and armor, culinarian and alchemist. Once this happens, you'll probably be able to find every alchemy recipe up on the lodestone, and this is probably when fishing will get revamped as well (Probably going to see logging/harvesting adjusted as well)
