You overestimate the mental capacity that people have to reflect on their decisions or the future outcomes of, particularly with the rush mentality people. Most of your peers are of the mentality of shoot first, ask questions later. The relation being how there's something new and (seemingly) achievable, and they want it right away without learning more about it and what's likely to come in the future (e.g. reducing the time or difficulty of obtaining it). They did not know, because they don't think. They'll reflect on how obvious it was later, like asking questions later, then point the blame on anything or anyone but themselves. Typical outcome.
