You won't get much hate. Half of the playerbase sings endless praises for XI.

Personally I never got the opportunity to play it, but just from speaking to friends about it, servers were much more connected. You needed groups to do content (even open world stuff), so if you were a jerk, you were gonna be shamed and nobody would want to play with you.

I played it and was fun, but vastly prefer solo friendly gameplay to old school games that require grouping to do anything.

FFXI had content that can be soloed, but required a major amount of gear setups and skill. Red Mage, Beastmaster were the best at soloing. Blm took a few in by capped battlefields, etc. What made FFXI so great was the endless content it offered, and how punishing it was if you failed it. A lot of gambling in capped battlefields, if you were lucky, you stacked a few million gil.

The game was pretty HC back then if you wanted the ultimate gear. 21-24 hour NM spawns, 4-12 day spawns, 3-5 day spawns, 48-72 hour spawns, placeholder NMs, lottery NMs, forced popped NMs, time based NMs. (NM: Notorious Monsters, meaning unique monster compared to it's local buddies)

In highest level areas, you needed buffs to avoid aggro, or face the consequences by dying. Some linked which means, yeah, GG. (Linked: Mob team up) Links were a deathzone for the Dynamis endgame.

Never get to experience the old FFXI 10+ years ago ever again.

I'm not a masochist, punishment for failing does not fall in fun column for me.

There was also that open world boss, I believe it was called Pandemonium Warden? A group/s tried to kill it for over 48+ hours and couldn't kill it, and had to stop trying to kill it because their members were getting physically ill from the extended gameplay.

Part of me wishes that something like that was in XIV. Odin is the closest thing, I suppose. But then again, trying out something like PW would kill me so. Kappa

Well XI wasn't exactly hard, it had it Challenging parts but that not what brought people together. People came to together in XI cause well that how the game was designed you really couldn't do much of anything without needing to group up with other people.

It was pretty much the system in Dark Souls but worse, but defeating could end up rolling in a sea of cash, or a very hot upgrade for your job. The gambling addicts you very fast.

Ya Pandemonium Warden, another group defeated it by taking numerous hours. Apathy LS I believe?

SE gave the NM a buff hammer to limit him 2 hours. Getting him to spawn was an absolute time burn and required a good group just for the pops.

PW had to be defeated 9x just for the drops, with 9 adds involved that hit hard as him almost. It was pointless killing adds, since they'll come back on the defeat and their form is based on what PW is. It's forms were set order based on how many times it's been defeated, and each of the forms based it's attacks on what the mobs(Adds)/bosses(PW) do.

You don't have to be a masochist to like punishment for failing.
There being a penalty for failing just means the value of success is that much higher.
There's little, less or no value in succeeding with no consequences if otherwise.

SMN was very good at soloing, and commonly solo'd to level up as they weren't wanted by parties. I leveled up solo from 50-75, with a few levels in Beastmaster parties as supplemental, hateless dmg.

*SMN could solo by repeatedly summoning Carbuncle then running away, and avoiding doing anything near the monster that would draw hate. If you stayed hateless, Carbuncle could take back hate with just 1 hit. Goblins and Bombs would self-destruct, granting a lot of exp (fighting monsters much higher than normally for your level). SMN was also viable for soloing Beastmaster pets (low HP, hit hard), because pets took reduced dmg compared to players, but still hit pretty hard with their blood pacts (1min abilities). Summoners were fairly rare because they weren't very good in parties and soloing was stressful/not for everyone (extremely secluded camps with high level monsters that could easily kill you). In parties, summoners relied on their subjob heals from WHM (small/low level Cures chained, no easy-access stronger healing) and their large MP pool.
