Paladins are the elite of the sultansworn, and this is their captain that teaches us our skills. Even if we're rogue Paladin, the identity tied to our skills is that of a royal guard.
Even Solkzagyl's final skill is called "Sultan's Brand"

" In recognition of your deeds, he bestows upon you the gallant surcoat, sacred armor normally reserved for the most courageous of the Sultansworn. Although this is a violation of long-standing tradition, he believes there is no paladin more deserving of the honor. Wear your new armor with pride, free paladin, and continue to defend the people of Eorzea."
Straight from the journal of the level 50 quest.
Solkzagyl also talks about how it took a free paladin to make Oathkeeper shine again/show them the way etc.
Speaking of Oathkeeper, I want Oathkeeper. It looks super rad with the damascus steel swirly stuff on the blade.Originally Posted by Jenlyns

But remember that fancy swordplay and well-polished armor do not make you a paladin. You must be just in your heart and strive always to be an exemplar of true virtue.

A free paladin has no master. Instead he travels all lands, and in every place takes up the cause of the unarmed and defenseless. You swear fealty not to a lord, but to yourself - you are nobility amongst adventurers.
... Soul of the Paladin ... He who bears it commands the respect of all knights of honor.

It confirms that the skill we learn and the armor we get is indeed from a Royal guard. That's the lore of the job, even if we're personally not restricted by it. Exactly like the lore of Warrior claims that the Inner Beast is what makes ancient warriors destroy themselves, yet we have absolutely no issue with it right from the start.
Yes, and do we manage to make it shine ? By measuring the size of our longsword against each other...

Oh and you make it shine by being a truer knight than anyone else in the realm. Strength in combat is part of that.
Yeah I was thinking about that but the implementation would probably be godawful. If they went with WoW-style ilvl upgrades that'd be best but there'd probably be nonstop bitching about how soandso's relic is better because they get raid drops. If they went with FFXIV-style you'd get maximum power from running god damn low level roulette for hours on end.Maybe after WoW ripped off the relic idea from FFXIV (and the other games that had it), Yoshida will rip them off back and give us weapons like Oathkeeper.
That's exactly what you're doing when you're stopping primals, killing Nidhogg, destroying Ishgard's corrupt religion, delivering food, and sniffing chocobos.
