Apparently PLD is getting some small changes. Hopefully they'll at least be good ones.

TBF besides WAR, there is something broken about the tanks. PLD is in the worst spot, but DRK still needs changes to not be some awkward step child, SE just thinks DRK is fine because people use it in raids. I really hope that they fix the tanks in 4.0, none of this WAR is the godchild crap. I'm a healer main, but my boyfriend is drk, drk and ast kinda got this short end of the stick, but with healers at least whm and sch are fine. PLD has the shortest of sticks due to dps, if its not a fight that needs dps, PLD is still fine, its just not as safe as I feel it was in 2.0 (from my healer perspective), PLD used to be a tank I could leave alone for a while, then focus on other party members. It is no longer that :/

And the self-healing tank should be PLD.
You know, the job that is defined by "A fighter that can heal"...

In an ideal world the Dark Knight would bring debuffs and up the DPS that way, the Paladin would bring party buffs and up the DPS that way and the Warrior would bring a big axe and hit things very hard upping the DPS that way.
Giving each tank a main thing and a secondary thing and then trying to stop them to stepping over each other in those areas would go along way.
WAR: 1. Big numbers 2. Reliable cooldowns
DRK: 1. Potent debuffs 2. AoE monster
PLD: 1. Potent buffs 2. Very good straightforward cooldowns
At the moment though, it seems WAR is at least adequate in all those areas, great in a lot of them. It doesn't leave much room for the others IMHO.
