Help with XI on Windows 10

The XIV forums are relatively always active compared to the XI forums and I need help with a controller issue and a lot of XIV players do still play XI so maybe I can get help with this.

I used to play XI on my Xbox 360, they shut that down, so I migrated to Windows 10, and everything is setup right in FFXI Config for the button layouts and everything, I checked files for a patch that was supposed to make a Wired 360 controller work, but I get no response for it in PlayOnline or XI itself. I'm not able to use my 360 Wired with the Play and Charge Kit when my PC recognizes it but PlayOnline and XI do not, and I'm not sure what to address for XI to recognize it. The Gamepad option is ticked and button layout is setup but it doesn't respond anywhere. Please help.

There's no recent info about this that I can find for anything after 2015 and a patch was supposed to have gone throughin December 2015 but that hasn't helped me either so maybe someone else on Windows 10 whose tried using a Wired 360 controller knows what I'm not doing to make sure this works.

Only the hardwired xbox 360 controllers work to my knowledge. That is what I am using currently. I know other games work with the wireless versions but not sure about FFXI.

With a wired controller. Enable x input and uncheck the two options below the sliders. Forget what they are. Also do not turn on hardware cursor as it may mess with it.

Some versions of windows require Direct Play. Not sure if this applies to you.

Well I'm using a Wireless controller but with the Plug N Play charge cable so that it functions as a Wired controller so that shouldn't be an issue for me AFAIK. But I did tick xinput and try and go about it that way, saved the settings, and upon being in XI my controller, the 360 one, only had the lights flashing still and no button input was being received, no input was being accepted for some reason even with buttons mapped out as if I was natively playing on the 360, and XI config setup plus that Xinput on the settings. Someone in an older forum post mentioned that December 2015 patch update that should correct issues with Windows 10 gamepads not functioning if you click on the Alternate button setups, of which the E one is supposed to work. Clicked that and logged into XI and still not usability.

the plug and play charge cable does not make the controller a wired one afaik, the xbox 360 controllers didnt output control through the sub like the playstation controllers do. it simply charges the battery pack.

Yeah I just figured it out really late so far, it was a big part of my issue for this. I used a Wireless controller for so long on my 360 and didn't ever use a Wired besides on my PS2 and Gamecube, I completely ignored how the Wireless 360 controller works only because the cable gives it it's charge when the battery is low, it doesn't transmit data, the controller just stays Wireless and gets a wired charge. I went out and bought a new Wired, just had to recalibrate some of the button layouts and now it works perfectly!

To my Knowledge as well XI doesn't like the 360 controller and has problems reading the Triggers from the 360 controller as well. SE doesnt have it listed as working hardware for XI. When I was trying to set it up while back Client didn't see the official drivers from Microsoft. I had both wired controller and wireless one and couldn't get them to worked. From what my guild mates have told me back in the day is that you can try many other workarounds like XInput or some other 3rd party programs to reprogam the controller but its something you have to google for. But in the end of the day I just bought logitech F310 controller and called it day for XI. That Controller works with every PC game so Maybe this will be a better idea for you if you cant get the 360 controller to work.
